You don’t have to read music to take an interest in your child’s piano practice.

Try asking:

“Can you show me something you’re working on?”

Then give them a minute to demonstrate. Ask which part feels comfortable and which part still needs some work.

Letting them explain can help you understand the assignment—and give them a chance to notice their own progress.

If something is confusing, write down the question for our next lesson. You don’t have to solve every musical mystery before dinner.

A piano or a keyboard? Before you buy, here’s where I’d start.

Children ages 5–10 may begin with a suitable unweighted keyboard. I usually recommend an upgrade within the first year or so, depending on progress and how serious the student is.

Do you need to buy a piano before starting lessons?

For children ages 5–10, a suitable unweighted keyboard can be a place to start. I usually tell parents to plan on upgrading within the first year or so. How soon depends on how fast lessons progress and how serious the student is.

The beginning of your song is getting plenty of practice. How’s the middle doing? 😄

If you keep getting stuck in the same place, try starting just before that spot.

Slow it down. Work on a small section, including the notes leading into and out of the trouble. Once it feels more comfortable, put it back into the whole phrase.

Starting over from the beginning every time can leave the hardest part getting the least attention.

Save this for the next time a piece gets stubborn.

You’re allowed to be a beginner as an adult.

You can have a job, a mortgage, and a calendar full of responsibilities—and still need help finding middle C. That’s a perfectly reasonable place to start.

Whether you’re coming back after years away or learning for the first time, we can work on reading music, understanding chords, and playing music you actually enjoy.

Once school starts, the week gets busy fast—homework, sports, dinner, and everything in between.

Piano practice doesn’t have to turn into a nightly battle. For many beginners, 10–15 focused minutes most days is a good place to start. Tie it to something that already happens, keep the assignment clear, and if one day gets missed, just pick it back up tomorrow.

A simple school-year practice plan
Here is a routine that works well for many beginners:

Choose four or five likely practice days.
Use the same general time whenever possible.
Start with ten to fifteen minutes.
Follow the assignment in Mr. Joe's Keystride app.
Finish with something enjoyable.
Adjust the routine if it is not working.
Try it for two weeks. If it does not fit, change the time or shorten the session.

A routine is only useful if your family can actually keep it.

🎹🌊 The 6th Annual Mr. Joe Piano Beach Recital is here!

This year, eight wonderful students shared 11 performances with their families and friends. I’m incredibly proud of every one of them—not only for how they played, but for having the courage to sit down at the piano and perform.

You’ll hear everything from first recital pieces to favorites like Defying Gravity, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Thunder Road, Minuet in G, and Für Elise.

Thank you to all the families who encourage these students week after week, and a special thank-you to my wife, Sara, for helping me put the day together.
