Laurie Hernandez is a Puerto Rican American gymnast. At age five, Hernandez began her gymnastics career. Hernandez was a part of the “Final Five” at the 2016 Summer Olympics where she won gold with Team USA. She was the youngest of the final five competing at 16 years old. Hernandez is the first US-born Hispanic gymnast to compete for Team USA since 1984.
“Growing up, there wasn’t an exact Hispanic role model that I had. I didn’t realize how big a difference I was making, going to the Olympics and being Hispanic, until I would be in an autograph session, and parents would come up to me and say, ‘You know, our family is so proud of you, you’re really doing Hispanics proud.'”
