A post from Ms. Alex:
I have two brothers that have been integral parts of bringing this school to life. One of them is extremely introverted and has always been an incredible artist. In high school (2009 graduate), he had a teacher who made him feel like this was not the case, and he stopped creating almost completely. There have been very few instances since then that we could get pieces of art out of him. Knowing that this can be a hard subject, I asked him if he would consider making simple plaques to go outside of each of our classrooms at The Wonder Nest. He said, “When you open, I will do that.” And he did.
The day we had our grand opening celebration, he showed up with these five beautiful wood-burned drawings of the birds that our classrooms are named after. He even signed them, which was something he was hesitant about (attention is not his thing). I felt the need to show these to everyone who walked into our celebration because I was/am so blown away by his talent.
My point in making this post is: Teachers and educational experiences can make or break the spirit of a child. Our teachers are selected very intentionally, with the understanding that honoring creativity and the whole child is a top priority. We get to look at these beautiful pieces every day and be reminded that, with a little bit of love and encouragement, humans can create beautiful things. I hope to continue to cultivate a space where people, young and old, feel safe to spread their wings, take up space, and show what they are capable of.
If you feel inclined, please join me in sharing some positivity with my brother and letting him know that his art matters. (Mom, don’t show this to him please. I will when the time is right. 😉)
