🌿 Healthy Aging Insight
What Do You Want Your Body to Keep Being Able to Do?

As we get older, it's easy to start telling ourselves:

"Maybe I shouldn't do that anymore."

Sometimes there are very good reasons to modify an activity. Injuries, health conditions, and changes in our bodies may mean we need to do things differently.

But age alone doesn't always have to be the reason we stop.

Our bodies are incredibly adaptable. They respond to what we repeatedly ask them to do—and they also respond to what we stop asking them to do.

We've all heard the saying "use it or lose it."

There's a lot of truth behind that when it comes to movement.

If you want to be able to get down on the floor—and back up again-- no matter what age you are, keep getting down on the floor and getting back up.

If you want to climb stairs as you age, keep using the stairs when you're able.

If you want to carry your own groceries, lift your suitcase, or pick up your grandchildren, continue working on your strength.

If you want to travel and explore new places, keep walking and building your endurance.

If you want to hike, golf, garden, play pickleball, dance, or ride a bike later in life, don't let the idea that you're "getting older" be the reason you stop doing those things today.

We don't have to move the way we did at 25.

But we also don't have to automatically stop challenging ourselves simply because another birthday comes around.

Keep moving. Keep practicing. Keep challenging your body appropriately.

Because the things we continue to ask our bodies to do today can help us maintain the ability to do them tomorrow.

Healthy aging isn't about trying to stay young.

It's about maintaining a body that supports the life you want to keep living.

So I'll leave you with this:

What do you want your body to still be able to do 10, 20, or even 30 years from now?

And are you still doing it today?

🌿 Let's Talk Nutrition
Fiber: Are You Getting Enough—Especially During Menopause?

When most people think about fiber, they think about digestion.

But fiber does so much more.

During perimenopause, menopause, and the years that follow, paying attention to fiber may become even more important as women experience changes that can affect cholesterol, blood sugar, body composition, digestion, gut health, and cardiovascular health.

Getting enough fiber can help support:

🌿 Healthy digestion and regularity
❤️ Heart health and healthy cholesterol
🩸 Healthy blood sugar control
🥗 Feeling fuller longer
🦠 A healthy and diverse gut microbiome

So how much fiber do we actually need?

Here's where it gets interesting.

Traditional dietary guidelines recommend approximately 25 grams per day for women age 50 and younger and 21 grams for women over 50.

But that doesn't necessarily mean women should start eating less fiber as they get older.

The lower recommendation is largely related to lower average calorie intake with age—not because fiber suddenly becomes less valuable.

In fact, some research and menopause-focused health experts are looking at the potential benefits of higher fiber intake during midlife and beyond.

Dr. Mary Claire Haver, an OB-GYN specializing in menopause, recommends women get at least 25 grams of fiber per day and encourages working toward approximately 30–35 grams or more, particularly for the potential cardiovascular and metabolic benefits.

And here's the surprising part:

Many women aren't even reaching 25 grams.

So rather than obsessing over a perfect number, a great first step is simply finding out how much you're actually eating.

Some of my favorite ways to add more fiber:

🫘 Beans and lentils
🫐 Berries
🥑 Avocado
🥦 Vegetables
🍎 Whole fruits
🥣 Oats and whole grains
🌱 Chia and flax seeds
🥜 Nuts and seeds

And remember—increase fiber gradually and increase your fluids along with it. Going from a low-fiber diet to 30+ grams overnight probably isn't going to make your digestive system very happy!

Here's my challenge for you:

Track what you eat for just one day and add up the fiber.

Are you getting 25 grams? 30? 35? Or are you surprised by how little you're actually getting?

I'd love to hear what you discover.

🌿 Healthy Aging Insight
Strength Is About More Than Muscle

When we hear the word strength, we often think about lifting heavier weights or building bigger muscles.

But as we age, strength takes on a much bigger meaning.

Strength is getting up from the floor without struggling.

It's carrying your groceries.

Climbing a flight of stairs.

Lifting your suitcase into the car.

Keeping your balance when you stumble.

Playing with your grandchildren.

Continuing to hike, travel, garden, work, and enjoy the activities you love.

Maintaining strength isn't just what our bodies look like.

It's about what our bodies allow us to do.

And the good news is, you don't need complicated workouts or hours in the gym to work on strength.

Simple things can make a difference:

💪 Sit-to-stands from a chair — strengthens the legs and hips we rely on every day.

💪 Squats or supported squats — help build lower-body strength for stairs, walking, and getting up and down.

💪 Wall or counter or kneeling pushup— an accessible way to work on upper-body strength.

💪 Carrying groceries or other appropriately weighted objects — challenges your arms, shoulders, grip, and core in a very practical way.

💪 Resistance bands or light weights — can be used to gradually challenge muscles as you become stronger.

💪 Walking hills or climbing stairs — adds a strengthening challenge to something you may already be doing.

The key is to start where you are and gradually challenge your body as you get stronger.

We don't need to be the strongest person in the room.

We simply want to be strong enough for the life we want to live.

What is something you want to stay strong enough to keep doing for years to come?

I'd love to hear your answer.

🌿 Healthy Aging Insight
When Did Health Become an Expense Instead of an Investment?

Over the years, I've noticed something interesting.

Many people don't think twice about spending money on a daily coffee, a new outfit, getting their nails done, or eating out several times a week.

But when it comes to investing in healthier food, a fitness class, better shoes, or something that could improve their health, they often pause.

It made me wonder...

When did we start thinking of our health as an expense instead of one of the most valuable investments we can make?

I'm not suggesting we shouldn't enjoy life's little pleasures. We absolutely should.

But what if we viewed caring for our health with the same importance?

The choices we make today don't just affect today.

They influence how we move, feel, and enjoy life for years to come.

What's one investment in your health that has truly been worth it?

🌿 Healthy Aging Insight
Adaptability: One of the Most Overlooked Keys to Healthy Aging

When people think about healthy aging, they often focus on things like flexibility, strength, or balance.

Those are all important.

But there's another quality that's just as important—and often overlooked:

Adaptability.

Our bodies are designed to adapt throughout our lives.

They adapt to movement.

They adapt to inactivity.

They adapt to strength training.

They adapt to poor posture.

They adapt to the habits we repeat day after day.

That's encouraging because it means the choices we make today can influence how we move and feel tomorrow.

Healthy aging isn't about trying to stop the aging process. It's about giving our bodies the opportunity to adapt in positive ways through consistent movement, better posture, adequate recovery, and healthy daily habits.

One of the greatest lessons I've learned is that meaningful change doesn't usually come from dramatic efforts. It comes from small, consistent actions repeated over time.

The body responds to what we ask of it.

The question is:

What are we teaching our bodies every day?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

🌿 Healthy Aging Insight
Your Body Is Always Listening

Most people don't think about their body until something hurts.

But long before pain shows up, our bodies are responding to the choices we make every day.

They respond to movement.
They respond to strength.
They respond to rest.
They respond to nutrition.
They respond to how we care for ourselves.

The encouraging part is that our bodies are incredibly adaptable. Every positive choice we make is another opportunity to build strength, improve resilience, and support the life we want to live.

Healthy aging isn't about perfection. It's about making small, consistent choices that help us keep doing the things we love—for years to come.

What's one activity you hope to keep enjoying for many years to come? I'd love to hear your answer in the comments.

🌿 HEALTHY AGING INSIGHT

Balance Is More Than Standing on One Foot

When most people think about balance, they picture standing on one foot or trying not to fall.

But balance is so much more than that.

It's stepping off a curb with confidence.

Walking on uneven trails.

Reaching into a cupboard.

Turning quickly when someone calls your name.

Carrying groceries while navigating the stairs.

Balance isn't just about your feet.

It depends on your muscles, your posture, your vision, your inner ear, and how well your brain and body communicate with one another.

The encouraging news?

Balance can improve at almost any age.

Every walk, every movement, every strength exercise, and every challenge you give your body helps reinforce those connections.

Healthy aging isn't about avoiding movement because you're afraid of falling.

It's about building the confidence to keep moving.

The more we move with purpose, the more confidently we move through life.
