Are you checking your child's hair for head lice? If you aren't, you should be. Lice is something that is always occuring in our schools. According to the Centers for Disease control (CDC):"Head lice should not be considered as a medical or public health hazard. Head lice do not spread disease."

More information on Head Lice and it's treatment can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/gen_info/faqs.html

For more information about head lice, you can also check with your child's health office. Please remind your child not to share protective helmets, fun masks at the store, coats, hats, scarves, ear muffs, ear buds, hair brushes, hair ties, etc. If it touches the hair, your child should not be sharing it. If you feel like your child has head lice, please contact your doctor for the best methods of treating. Your child's health office staff can help you also.

Head lice? At RMS? Probably, but not what you think...LOL...
Head lice is always present in our school district. Head lice is considered to be a social issue and not a medical issue. However, the health office does see it's fair share of head lice cases and makes every attempt to work with parents to help their students. The best way to keep your child from getting head lice is to teach them not to share hats, ear buds, combs, hair pretties, etc. If it touches the hair, don't share it. OH, and those cool hat/masks at Walmart, don't try them on. If it could have touched someone else's head, don't put it on yours. This is the same for sporting equipment. Please don't share football helmets, batting helmets, baseball caps, etc. Tea tree oil is a great product that seems to help reduce the likelihood of getting head lice. Check your child frequently for head lice. The earlier you catch it, the easier time you will have clearing it up. As always, check with your child's doctor about the best way to treat and prevent head lice for your child.

I have attached a common recipe for the tea tree oil. And, 2 videos on head lice. You can call the health office at RMS 815-562-2847 if you have specific questions.

One of the best ways to prevent disease is through vaccinations. Remember that kids will need to get back to school vaccinations. Most schools in Ogle County will exclude children who are not vaccinated. Check with your schools to determine what vaccines will be required before school starts. If you need assistance you can also call OCHD at 815-562-6976.
