PRAIRIE HILL Learning Center Nature-based Montessori school serving children 18 months- 8th grade on a 12-acre campus near Lincoln There is a big red barn with horses, cats and chickens.

The mission of Prairie Hill is to offer education in an atmosphere that promotes individual growth as well as caring for others and the Earth. Prairie Hill is an independent nonprofit Montessori school founded in 1981. We are committed to environmental sustainability and are Nebraska’s first wind and solar powered school. The campus is focused on the outdoors with acres of open space, woods, trail

s and prairie. We enjoy and learn from our organic gardens and fruit orchard. The children's learning environments include a historic Farmhouse, new Meadow House, versatile Prairie House, and innovative Earth House. Prairie Hill is a year-round learning center offering Montessori programs for children ages 18 months through 8th grade. There are just over 100 students on campus. The individual and small group Montessori instruction within multi-aged communities offers rich social and academic benefits to children. The children participate in planning and cooking healthy meals each day. Their hands-on learning extends to composting, recycling, caring for the animals and earth, as well as participating in service opportunities. Our Lead Guides are all Montessori certified licensed teachers with advanced degrees and years of experience. Prairie Hill Learning Center is an approved private school through the Nebraska Department of Education and a licensed childcare facility by the Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Join our Older Elementary (OE) & Adolescent students for a Prairie Hill student-run Coffee Cart!

Grab a coffee and a treat, and get to know a few fellow parents while you’re getting caffeinated. 🤠

A quick parking note: if you’d like to stop at the Coffee Cart, please park along the road before turning into Prairie Hill and walk up. Please don’t leave your car unattended in the drop-off line.

There’s something magical about watching our students with the horses. 🐴🌾

At Prairie Hill, our goal is for every student to have meaningful time with the horses each week. And that time goes far beyond riding.

Our full-time Horse Guide, Lanie, works patiently and intentionally with students of all ages, teaching them how to care for, understand, and connect with Ace, Pepe, and King Fritz.

Through feeding, grooming, tack, body language, communication, and learning how to regulate their own energy around the horses, our students are learning lessons far beyond their years.

Teamwork in action with our Older Elementary students🌻

Last week, OE students took on a LEGO team-building challenge. Each group had one “communicator” who could see the completed LEGO shape, then had to guide their teammates in building a matching version, without simply showing them the answer.

A fun afternoon of communication, listening, problem-solving, and working together, all outside at the picnic tables. ☀️🌿

We couldn’t be more excited to welcome returning & new students back to Prairie Hill. Lots of time outside, boots on, hugs & hellos, and hard work at the barn. 🤠

From settling back into familiar routines to exploring new spaces and making new friends, there’s something pretty special about seeing Prairie Hill come alive again! 🌼

HAPPY FIRST DAY to our youngest students at Prairie Hill. 🌾🌻

Bright eyes, galoshes on, new routines to learn, and so much to explore.

From the self-guided work inside each house, to the big trees just outside the door, to the junior and big woods only a walk away, there is so much space here for children to explore, play, wonder, and grow.

One of the things we love most about Prairie Hill is how much room kids have to simply be kids, with so much learning happening naturally along the way.

Here’s to a wonderful year ahead. 💛
