Father Michael Panka, parochial vicar at St. Odilia in Shoreview, blessed a new altar July 16 that was placed inside Philomena House in Roseville, a home for women who are pregnant and homeless.

Mike and Angie Fuith attended the blessing, alongside a group of 20 supporters and staff of the maternity home. The Fuiths had a compelling reason for sitting in the front row for the blessing and Mass that followed. Read their story in The Catholic Spirit, the official publication of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis: https://www.thecatholicspirit.com/news/local-news/philomena-house-welcomes-new-altar-for-resident-mothers/

St. Bartholomew was martyred by being flayed alive - ouch! As such, he is the patron saint of those suffering from skin diseases and of anyone who works with leather (the skin of animals). The Church can be quite earthy at times in the patronages She chooses!

God is in the details - always. And here's an incredible detail that often gets misinterpreted. Throughout the centuries, Christians have often taken the idea that "the gates of hell shall not prevail" against the Church as a defensive metaphor. This means that the Church will be assaulted but remain standing.

But the "gates of hell" themselves are defensive structures. Our Lord is noting that his Church, rather than standing still and being battered by sin, is meant to "go on the offensive" against evil. This is most clearly shown in the Acts of the Apostles, when the disciples go out with great joy and energy to proclaim the Good News. We're asked to do the same at Sacred Heart!

The next time you eat bread or drink alcohol, think of the incredible action of yeast. Though invisible to the eye, it transforms our food and drink. Jesus likens the Kingdom of God and the action of the Holy Spirit to yeast in Matthew 9:17 and 13:33. Sacred Heart family - how's that for an edible, drinkable ?

Today, we remember St. Bernard, who was an amazing man of prayer, wisdom, and zeal. In all things, he longed for the rest of God. May we long for that same rest here at Sacred Heart.
