This afternoon, more than 400 high school students from across Roanoke County had the honor of hearing an inspirational message from coach J.J. Redick - noted basketball star from Cave Spring High School, Duke University and multiple NBA teams. He currently is the head coach of the L.A. Lakers. Coach Redick talked about the importance of persistence and commitment to reach your dreams and how learning from failure should be a motivation for excellence.

Thanks to the Summit Sportsplex for making this amazing opportunity happen for our students!

This afternoon Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger got a tour of the new Roanoke County Career and Technology Center and met with local industry leaders helping bring the new facility online in Roanoke County, Virginia.

This afternoon, Governor Abigail Spanberger toured the Roanoke County Career and Technical Education Center (RCCTC), still under construction and set to welcome students in January 2027.

As part of her tour, the governor commented at length about the need for career and technical education (CTE), particularly as it applies to workforce development. She noted recent international trade missions where different companies had praised the quality of the workforce in Virginia and how that workforce starts with CTE centers like the new RCCTC.

“The principal that a region is investing in real opportunities, in some cases, actual real certifications where people can walk right onto a job site, but the actual different ways to partner with industry to create or nurture skills sets, speaks strongly to the region’s investment, but also to the larger Virginia perspective. The recognition that the way we grow the economy is by investing in the talent pool,” the governor said.

Following the tour, the governor held a brief discussion with some area industry leaders about the need for workforce development programs at the high school level.

GHS & GMS are exploring options to improve our release of busses in the afternoons, especially in this heat. This week, 8/31-9/4, we are trying a release at our back exit left onto Ingal Blvd. Next week, 9/8-9/11, an officer will be stopping traffic coming up Tobey from Fort Lewis Church Rd. Both of these methods will result in a different traffic flow from approximately 3:32 -3:40 pm than what is traditional. We will gather data on these two new methods, compare it to our original method, and make a decision on what is the safest, most manageable, and most efficient method. Thanks to the community for their patience as we work to transport our students safely.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving: Parents & Students, Mark Your Calendars!

Is your student taking Driver Education through Health & PE 10 this school year? Student attendance at a Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentation is required by Virginia law, and parents are strongly encouraged to attend with their future teen driver.

These 90-minute presentations bring together parents, students, schools, law enforcement and community resources to help teens become safe and responsible drivers. Topics include teen driving risks, the parent’s role, Virginia teen driving laws, graduated licensing restrictions, insurance and more.

All presentations begin at 7 p.m.

Sept. 28 — Hidden Valley High School
Oct. 7 — Northside High School
Oct. 14 — William Byrd High School
Oct. 21 — Glenvar High School
Oct. 27 — Cave Spring High School

Students may attend any one of the presentations. If the presentation at their school isn't convenient, they can attend at another high school.

Important: Students who do not attend a presentation will not be eligible to receive their DEC-1 card or participate in behind-the-wheel training, which is required to become eligible for a driver's license.

Parents who are unable to attend may complete an opt-out form, but the parent opt-out does not excuse the student's attendance requirement.
Parents are the greatest influence on teen driving behaviors. Join us to help your teen develop safe driving habits from the very beginning.
