Mrs. Kirby’s egg experiment

Mrs. Kirby’s physical science class’s experiment revolves around testing velocity and momentum. Dr. Whiddon had the opportunity to help by building the ramp Mrs. Kirby used to do the egg experiment. Dr. Whiddon built the ramp by using the measurements Mrs. Kirby wanted, which are 304 cm long and 17.5 cm wide. Wood and screws were also involved to make the ramp. It took Dr. Whiddon about 30 minutes to make it, which includes the time it took to get the supplies and the time it took to actually build the ramp.
The cars for Mrs. Kirby’s experiments are made out of two pieces of paper, four wheels, two axles, and a straw. The first part of the experiment is sending the car with a plastic egg in it down the ramp to test the velocity of the car, the second part is sending the car down the ramp with a weighted egg to see how the velocity of the paper car changes, and the third part of the experiment is sending the car down the ramp with a real egg. This time when it goes down the ramp there will be a concrete wall at the end of the ramp to really test the car’s integrity to protect the egg.
As the experiments are done, Mrs. Kirby uses a velocity sensor that connects to her phone to record the different speeds of each group’s car. Eventually, towards the end of the experiment, Mrs. Kirby raises the ramp higher for the cars to gather more momentum, which increases the chances of an egg breaking.

First 5/4 a success!!

The first ever Fifth Quarter was Friday and began after the game, starting at 9 at Bridging the Gap. Overall everyone who went had fun. There was a dj and plenty of games to play such as jenga, card games, air hockey and more. The people who went said they liked the party because they could have fun, play games, or just hang out with friends. The only thing that could make Fifth Quarter even better is if more students came out to support it. So make sure to show school spirit, and don’t miss out on this Friday’s glow party at Bridging the Gap after the homecoming game. It’s free to get in, and when students get there, all they have to do is tell the organizers their names and they will check them off of their list.

New perspectives for HHS student leaders

Four student leaders shared their opinions and perspectives on Mr. Chris Theilacker’s 9/11 presentation today. From questioning character, to learning new things, and even reflecting on history, Ameila Tipton, Reece Hill, JaMichael Parker, and A’syriana Lemon covered it all. SGA Treasurer Ameila Tipton said that she began to question what she would've done if she had been there on September 11, 2001. She said she was moved by Mr. Theilacker’s words about the people who helped others in the towers that day and showed their strong character instead of trying to help themselves. Ameila said, “If I were there as an ordinary person, would I help people?” Senior class president Reece Hill thought in a similar way. She said she saw things from a new perspective because she had never considered the regular civilian people who risked their lives to help others. Along with that, Reece and most other interviewees said they didn’t know that 30,000 to 50,000 were evacuated from Manhattan by boat that day. Furthermore, SGA Vice President A’syriana Lemon found it interesting that she had never considered how it was to be a soldier during this time. Mr. Theilacker joined the military four years prior to 9/11, and he saw the change the country went through. A’syriana pointed out that she felt sympathy for the soldiers during this time because they did not know what was in store for them. Lastly, SGA President JaMichael Parker had many new perspectives from this presentation. JaMichael said he gained a new viewpoint of how Mr. Theilacker and other educators wanted Americans who were not born at the time to never forget the impact of 9/11. He says he learned that “remembering what happened in the past, can help what happens in the future.” Overall, these student leaders demonstrate that they have learned from Mr. Theilacker and have applied his message into their lives.

Friday's 9/11 assembly aims to bring insight & perspective

This Friday will mark 25 years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. While this monumental anniversary is quickly approaching, commemorating these events has been in the works for much longer. In early August, Mr. Chris Theilacker reached out to Superintendent Mr. Foster with a proposal of a 9/11 assembly. This assembly will be held tomorrow morning in the auditorium for grades seven through twelve and faculty. Mr. Theilacker is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel who served 23 years in the military. He served before, during, and after the 9/11 attacks and has many different perspectives on the event. He is also an ordained minister, former educator, and an active leader in his community, giving him a plethora of experiences and knowledge. His purpose is to bring new insight and perspective to students and teachers and aid in the understanding of these tragic events. He faced this era as a soldier and went on to educate students about it as a history teacher. Now he aims to shed light to the many sides of the September 11th attacks that may not be as discussed today.
