POWERHOUSE SPORTS PRESENTS: FRIDAYS IN THE SOUTH

There are places where football is played.

And then there are places where football is lived.

Tucked away in the hills of eastern Alabama sits Roanoke. A small town by most measures. But on a Friday night in the fall, when the sun begins to disappear and the lights at Wright Field come alive, there’s nothing small about this place.

Because around here, Friday night belongs to the Handley Tigers.

You can see the tradition before the Tigers ever take the field. The walk down those brick steps. The players reaching out to touch the Tiger head statue. The students filling an entire section of bleachers. The cheerleaders on the sideline. Families firing up the grills and tailgating hours before kickoff. And in years past, the sound of a train horn cutting through the night after another Handley touchdown.

These aren’t just traditions.

They’re pieces of Roanoke.

And for generations, winning has been part of that tradition, too.

Legendary Head Coach Larry Strain helped define an era of Handley football, leading the Tigers to two state championships and leaving behind a standard that can still be felt inside Wright Field today.

Now, Head Coach Chris White is writing his own chapter.

Different era. Different players. But the expectation remains.

Win. Compete. Represent Handley. And when November arrives, plan on still playing football.

Because in Roanoke, seasons aren’t measured only by wins and losses. They’re remembered by packed bleachers, playoff nights, championships, generations of Tigers, and the memories made beneath those lights.

Roanoke may look like another small Alabama town on the map.

But come Friday night?

It becomes Handley.

The lights shine a little brighter. The crowd gets a little louder. And for a few hours, football isn’t just the biggest thing happening in town.

It is the town.

This is Roanoke.
This is Handley Tiger football.
This is Fridays in the South. 🐅🏈

We can’t wait to see all of our students arriving this morning for the first day of the school year! Today is one of our most anticipated days of the year - welcoming all of our Tiger Cubs back! ♥️ We know this day is a bittersweet day for you all and we welcome you to walk your child to class on the first day. We assure you that we will take great care of your babies as they transition back into school mode! Happy First Day of School! 🎉
