The District provides the technical expertise for design and installation of conservation planning. The public is invited to attend.
The Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District is comprised of all the land within Botetourt and Craig Counties.The District Boundaries are defined as the “Lands lying within the boundaries of the Botetourt and Craig Counties including the incorporated towns therein.” This District was organized in 1987 and was so named for the two county seats, Fincastle and New Castle and the beautifu
l mountains found in each county. There are portions of three watersheds within the District:
James River/Chesapeake Bay – Roanoke River – New River
Through directed objectives we strive to enhance and improve water quality by administering the Virginia Agricultural BMP Cost Share Program, actively supporting our local partnerships with DCR, VCE, NRCS, FSA and the VDOF. Farm plans are approved by the District Board of Directors for the USDA/NRCS Farm Bill, in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements. The MCSWCD informs landowners, citizens and stakeholders about the District and available resources, informing landowners of cost-share opportunities available for their efforts in maximizing water quality and land stewardship practices. The District promotes watershed protection and environmental impact aspects of the John’s Creek Flood Contral Dams by increasing public awareness of the existence and purpose of the dams. MCSWCD promotes and provides educational opportunities and resources for local citizens, students and organizations. Support is provided for the local and state Envirothon, local primary, middle and high schools, 4-H, FFA and other community civic organizations. The Mountain Castles Soil and Water Conservation District meets the third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 pm at the Bonsack USDA Center.
