🇺🇸 Home of the free because of the brave. From all of us at A Bit of Spurs Training Stable, we wish you a safe and blessed Independence Day.

Today we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy, the sacrifices made by those who have served, and the blessings of family, friends, and this incredible country we call home.

Whether you’re spending the day at the barn, around the grill, on the lake, or watching fireworks, we hope you have a safe and memorable Independence Day.

As you celebrate, don’t forget about your four-legged friends! Horses and other animals can be sensitive to fireworks. If possible, feed a little before dark, make sure they have plenty of fresh water, check fences and gates, and give them a quiet, secure place for the evening.

From our barn family to yours, thank you for being part of A Bit of Spurs Training Stable. We’re grateful for each and every one of you.

Well guys… Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on Monday, Feb. 2 🫠
Which means…six more weeks of winter!!!❄️❄️❄️

So I asked Holly what she thought about it.
She had questions.
And zero patience.

Sir. Respectfully.
We are tired.
The horses are tired.
The water hoses are tired.
And my patience left sometime around week three 😅🐴

At this point, Phil and I need to have a conversation.

🥶❄️ Bitter cold temps are here — let’s talk horse care! ❄️🥶

With these extreme winter temperatures, a few basics go a long way in keeping our horses comfortable and healthy:

🐴 Fresh, unfrozen water — Horses still need to drink plenty in cold weather. Heated buckets or frequent checks make a huge difference.
🌾 Free-choice hay — Hay is their internal heater! Extra forage helps them maintain body heat.
🏠 Shelter & wind block — A run-in, barn access, or even good wind protection helps conserve warmth.

For some horses, blankets can be a great added layer of protection, especially for seniors, hard keepers, clipped horses, or those sensitive to the cold.
