Over three weeks in late June and early July, 20 high-achieving students from across Virginia participated in the Governor’s Summer Residential School for Medicine and Health Sciences, an immersive, hands-on healthcare experience.

Day 14: Students spent a full day at the Bradley Free Clinic rotating through triage, medicine, pharmacy, lab, dental, and substance abuse counseling. Additionally, students stuffed over 120 bags for the homeless population in Roanoke. Students also learned about the importance of free clinics and FQHCs in supporting the overall health of communities.

Day 13 Part1: Students spent a full day at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine receiving their ceremonial white coats. The event was hosted by Assistant Dean Dr. Witcher and the keynote was provided by Pediatric Emergency Physician and Associate Dean Dr. Prusakowski. (individual pictures will be posted later). Day 12: This was day 2 of clinicals at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Students engaged with the Chief Executive Medical Officer, Chair of Anesthesia, a Psychiatrist, a Internal Medicine Hospitalist, and a Psychiatrist before heading out onto clinical floors. They shadowed providers on everything from neurosurgery to pediatric intensive care to emergency medicine today. Special thank you to Alicia Williams for all the coordination.

Day 11: Students started clinical rotations today at Carilion Clinic Roanoke Memorial Hospital in the Cardiovascular Institute. Students shadowed in areas based on their interests including: Cardiac Surgery, Anesthesiology, Dialysis, Cardiac Cath, Cardiac ICU, ECMO and other areas. Students also talked with the Chair of Cardiology, Chair of Surgery, Director of Clinical Research, Human Factors, and the Director of ECMO. Day 10 Part 1: The students started the day on the serious side with Dr. Emmanuel Henry-Ajudua, Attending Orthopedist with Carilion Clinic . Dr. Henry-Ajudua shared his experience from undergrad through present day and entertained many questions from the students. The students then went hands-on getting CPR certified with faculty from The Emergency Services Program at Radford University Carilion.

Day 9 Part 2: The second half of the day was split with part at the Fralin Biomedical Research Instituten in Dr. Poelzing's lab where cardiac conduction is being studied. Thank you Rowan. Lastly, six PhD students working as research assistants shared their jouneys. The later aftern with the Appalachian College of Pharmacy.
