🇺🇸 HANDLEY HIGH SCHOOL REMEMBERS 9/11 🇺🇸

As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Handley High School students are making sure that the lives lost that day are remembered—not simply as a number, but one name at a time.

Today, our history and Community Studies and government students placed 2,977 American flags on the “triangle” at Handley High School. Each flag bears the name of a person whose life was senselessly cut short by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

2,977 flags. 2,977 names. 2,977 lives.

This memorial was truly a school-wide effort. We are incredibly thankful for the support of our school administrators, our Career Math classes, who measured and gridded the area so the flags could be placed properly, and our OEC classes, who cleaned the shrubbery and spread pine straw to prepare the area.

And hats off to the teachers and students who worked in extreme heat today to carefully place every flag. It was hot. It was tiring. But as we discussed while we worked, there are 2,977 names on those flags representing people who would have given anything for one more hot, ordinary September day. That thought puts our temporary discomfort into perspective.

We invite our students, families, alumni, and community members to visit the memorial over the coming days. Walk among the flags. Read the names. Remember that behind every name was a person with a family, friends, plans, dreams, and a future that should have been theirs.

This is only the beginning of Handley High School’s commemoration of the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Additional remembrance activities are planned throughout next week, culminating in a school assembly Friday morning.

Twenty-five years later, a new generation of students is learning why we promised:

May we always remember the lives lost, honor the heroes who answered the call, and teach the generations who came after why September 11 must never become just another date in a history book.
