In 1996 two Roanoke churches took a mission trip to Ghana. When they returned, they vowed to continue Kimoyo, LTD. is a 501(c)3 corporation.
It grew from a faith-based partnership formed between two Roanoke, Virginia, churches - St. John's Episcopal Church and Kingdom Life Ministries, International. There are two branches to the organization; one in Roanoke, Virginia and the other in the rural upper northeastern region of Ghana. Education, Roanoke Valley:
Kimoyo, LTD. offers after school educational programs in cultural diversity to t
he Roanoke City Schools and other organizations. These programs have three goals: to bring primarily African culture to life through history, storytelling, dance, music and art, thereby enhancing awareness and appreciation; provide resources for area elementary school teachers in meeting the Virginia Board of Education Standards of Learning with specific programs on the Mali, Ashanti, and Songue Kingdoms; and to help young people of the Roanoke Valley begin to appreciate their role as global citizens. To date, more than 800 presentations to over 5,000 children have been made. Na’aba Akparibilla Medical Centre, Ghana:
Located in the village of Zebilla and staffed by 13 medical professionals, the Centre provides care to 90,000 people in 22 communities, 26,000 of whom are within easy traveling distance. Located in a region where HIV/AIDS is on the rise and infant mortality rates are high, largely due to malarial infections and lack of knowledge about immunizations and parasitic infections, the Centre is a vital medical resource. Fully equipped, it has a pharmacy, laboratory, consulting room, labor room, doctor’s office and the only ultrasound machine in a 90 mile radius. Microfinance, Ghana:
Begun in 2007, the microfinance program has been life-changing with tremendous visible impact for women and their families. This program has provided funding to start businesses for over 130 women in Zebilla and surrounding villages in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Run by Kimoyo’s African partner organization, the African Turning Point Foundation, loans ranging from $100 to $300 have funded a hairstyling business, created a wholesale business of guinea fowl raising, and open air retail outlets for fried guinea fowl. New adventures are starting daily but the true significance lies in the women’s capacity to learn how to build businesses, work collectively, to budget, to pay for school fees, to buy medicine and save for the future. When the woman is empowered, the next generation thrives. Soccer Literacy Program for Girls:
This program has been extremely successful in using the beloved sport of soccer as an incentive for learning English, an essential skill in the Ghanaian business world today. Although many languages are spoken in Ghana, to pursue a professional career one must speak English. Girls, who otherwise would leave school early to contribute to the household, are already at a sever disadvantage in school. Girls in our program are now completing three month long sessions of the course. Each session is composed of one our of English practice followed by one hour of soccer training. Many of the girls have gone on to further their education. Internet Cafe:
The African Turning Point Foundation Internet Café, located on the same grounds as the medical clinic, was completed in 2009. In addition to providing low cost Internet, copying, printing, laminating, and binding the café will soon play an important role for the clinic by enabling them to share x-rays and other medical data with colleagues in the United States.

Today’s the day! GIVE Roanoke is here!!!
Follow the link below to help support Kimoyo and the work we do in Roanoke and beyond!
Our Soccer Literacy program is thriving! Kimoyo works to deliver new soccer balls and uniforms regularly and the excitement among the teams was contagious. We now work with 8 schools and support close to 250 junior high girls - and the outcomes are remarkable
These students consistently have the highest pass rates for entrance into Senior Secondary School, a crucial step in shaping their futures. When we first began, none of the students qualified. Now, every single girl who takes the exam passes. That opens doors to careers as nurses and teachers - even future leaders.
This program doesn’t just teach academics and athletics - it restores dignity, amplifies voices, and nourishes students with regular meals.
It costs $125 per student and can forever change the life of a girl in rural Ghana
This GIVE Roanoke, help us continue transforming futures - one girl at a time.
