That Payroll Guy Spending over 20 years in the complicated arena of payroll, let me help simplify it for you.

Payroll Guy was officially OFF the clock this weekend. 😂🦃

No tax updates. No compliance conversations. No W-2s. No explaining why somebody’s “taxes look different this check.” Just Blacksburg, football, friends, laughs, and a whole lot of Hokie energy.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you have to make room for the stuff that fills your cup too. We spend a lot of time building careers, businesses, teams, and brands. None of that means much if we forget to actually enjoy the life we’re building.

This weekend was a good reminder.

Now back to your regularly scheduled payroll foolishness. 😂

👀 TPG is working on something…

I’m looking for a logo designer who knows how to create something that doesn’t look like it came from a $12 template.

Need someone creative, sharp, and good with branding. Bonus points if you also create video trailers/teasers because whatever this is 👀 is going to need a proper introduction.

Not giving any more details publicly just yet. 😂

If that’s you, or you know somebody who is NICE with it, tag them below or send me a DM with their work.

And no, I’m not telling y’all what it’s for yet. Mind your business. 😂

A lot of people have reached out over the last 24 hours asking the same question…

“So…are you okay?”

First, thank you. The calls, texts, DMs, and comments have honestly meant a lot.

My answer?

I’m more than okay.

I’ve always believed that some of the biggest opportunities show up disguised as uncertainty. While a lot of people see change and immediately think “What’s next?”, I tend to think, “Let’s see what doors this opens.”

So I’m at peace.

I’m grateful for everything my journey at CBIZ has given me. It has shaped my career, introduced me to lifelong friends, and allowed me to serve an industry I genuinely love.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this: your purpose isn’t tied to a logo.

Whether it’s through speaking, writing, teaching, creating content, or helping payroll professionals solve the problems nobody else wants to solve, I’m not going anywhere.

In fact…I think I’m just getting started.

Thank you to every person who checked on me. It reminded me that this payroll community is more than an industry. It’s family.

Stay tuned. I have a feeling the next chapter is going to be a fun one. 👀

Sometimes the best investment you can make isn’t in a new tool, a new strategy, or another certification. It’s in stepping away for a moment.

Over the past couple of weeks, I traded payroll deadlines for passport stamps, experienced three incredible countries, met amazing people, and came home with a fresh perspective.

One thing travel reminds you of is that while every place has its own culture, language, and way of doing things, great service, genuine relationships, and kindness are understood everywhere.

Now it’s time to unpack, catch up on email, and get back to helping payroll professionals navigate an industry that never slows down. But I’m bringing a renewed appreciation for the people behind the work.

Here’s to new perspectives, lifelong memories, and getting back to doing what I love.

Cringe Week 2026 is almost over 😮‍💨

Why is this week Cringe Week? Well, let me explain…

Working for a service bureau, we have a responsibility to keep our clients informed of regulatory and processing updates…to include national holidays. No matter how much we communicate in advance, clients are surprised when items arise…

“Why is my check date Thursday?”
“Why am I being asked to process my payroll by Thursday for my Tuesday check date?”
“Wait….why are you all closed Friday?”

This year marks Year Six of Juneteenth being a national holiday. And yet…here we are with not only surprised clients, but then we encounter those who don’t mind speaking their prejudiced opinion regarding the holiday. There were so many “amazing” contributions that came across my desk as far as frustrations, but this year’s top comment was a client who expressed her disappointment regarding “the bogus holiday”.

Imagine reading these comments from payroll professionals, HR managers, and, yes, even owners of companies. Also, put yourself in my position reading this as a *looks at back of hands and arms* Black male.

The irony is that every year we spend more time debating the holiday than understanding it.

Juneteenth isn’t about taking a day off. It isn’t about politics. It isn’t about inconveniencing payroll schedules.

It’s about the day freedom finally reached people who had been legally freed for more than two years but had never been told.

Think about that for a second.

As payroll professionals, we’re in the business of communication, compliance, and making sure people receive what they’re entitled to. Juneteenth is literally a reminder of what happens when information doesn’t reach the people who need it.

So yes, your payroll may need to be processed a day early. Yes, your check date may shift. And yes, our offices may be closed.

We’ll survive. 😏

What we shouldn’t do is lose sight of why the holiday exists in the first place.

Happy Juneteenth. ❤️🖤💚

I’ve sat through HUNDREDS of presentations on generations in the workplace over the years. Some good. Some forgettable. Some that made me question my life choices before the caffeine kicked in. 😂

But this one? Different. Very different.

By far the BEST presentation on generations in the workplace I’ve ever heard. Period.

absolutely crushed this session. The perfect mix of research, humor, storytelling, and those “well damn…he’s right” moments that had the entire room locked in.

One of the biggest takeaways for me:
“Technology is only new if you remember the way it was before.”

Simple statement. Massive perspective shift.

This wasn’t one of those sessions where you walk out with a couple buzzwords and a slide deck you’ll never open again. This was the kind of presentation that actually changes how you think about leadership, communication, hiring, training, and workplace expectations across generations.

Payroll Congress…THIS is how you do a keynote. 👏🔥
