The Highland Park community was busy this Earth Day!
K-2 students tied the holiday in with their ongoing literacy curriculum of trees, birds, and pollinators by planting a dogwood tree together. Students participated in the tree planting celebration by presenting poems, yoga tree stretches, facts, and even birdhouses they created to share a little of their learning across grade levels.
After school, the PTA invited students and families to participate in a park clean up to encourage pride in our school community. With help from the Clean Valley Council, clean up volunteers had the necessary gear to keep our community and Earth clean.

Earth Day clean up! Let's take pride in our school and clean up the surrounding area. Meet today at 3:00 p.m., in front of the school. Supplies are provided. Students must have a guardian present. Please fill out the waiver prior to the clean up.
Be sure to complete your smart waiver ahead of time! Thank you in advance for being part of the team that keeps our Valley, streams, and rivers clean! We couldn’t do it without our fantastic, dedicated volunteers.
There is a lot to say and so little time. Roanoke City cut the school budget before any other item because it was a larger, easy target. They didn't start with the unnecessary line items, which many still remain in the proposed budget. They started with education. We are at risk of losing our PLATO program and wonderful teachers. Teachers are losing jobs and students are losing valued programs.
We cannot be quiet. We must speak out for our children and community. We must not give up! Sign up to speak, send emails, show up in Highland Blue or educational shirts. Tell them to restore our budget! Our students deserve better! We all deserve better!
