Have you been following this story online? Because we definitely have!

When the crew at River Reach Construction heard a tiny meow coming from inside one of their excavators, their workday quickly turned into a rescue mission. They freed the little kitten, made sure she was cared for and eventually welcomed Sue, short for Komatsu, as an honorary member of the crew. She even has the hard hat and safety vest to prove it!

Big shoutout to River Reach Construction for reminding us that some of the best people in the construction industry have pretty big hearts, too.

We think Sue may have found her calling in the skilled trades.

Programs like this are possible because of partners who believe in creating opportunities for the next generation. A big thank you to the New River Valley Home Builders Association for helping tell the story of our students and the impact of these camps!

We are so grateful to the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Masonry Association for their generous $5,000 donation in support of launching masonry training right here at Build Smart Institute!

Earlier this week, Joe Corriveau, Executive Director of the VMA, joined Kathy Nordstrom of Chaney Enterprises, Charles Craddok of Dominion Block Brick and Hardscapes , and Larry Peterson of Thompson Masonry to present the gift to Michelle Ramaker, President of Build Smart Institute. This gift and their support underscores the power of industry and education working together to create new opportunities in the skilled trades.

With the Virginia Masonry Association’s investment helping make this new program possible, enrollment is open for Masonry 1, beginning October 12!

This inaugural class marks an exciting milestone as we expand hands-on training and create a new pathway for students to develop in-demand masonry skills and connect with career opportunities in the industry.
