We were honored to welcome Ed Brady, President & CEO of Home Builders Institute - HBI, to Build Smart Institute this week.

Alongside representatives from Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association and Bedford County Economic Development, Mr. Brady toured the training facility, met with students, and learned about the career pathways they are pursuing while seeing firsthand the projects they are building in the lab.

During the visit, the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association presented a generous contribution to the Build U Scholarship Fund, reinforcing a shared commitment to creating opportunities for students pursuing careers in construction.

We are grateful to these partners for investing in our students and supporting Build Smart's mission to develop the skilled workforce of tomorrow.

Supporting the health and well-being of the construction workforce is an important part of building a stronger industry.

That's why we were pleased to welcome Carilion Clinic's Wellness team to Build Smart Institute this week, to provide biomedical screenings for both students and employees, along with valuable education about health considerations that impact construction professionals.

Construction is a physically demanding field, and issues such as heart health, stress management, and preventative care have a significant impact on both quality of life and jobsite safety. By helping our future and current workforce better understand these factors, we can support longer, healthier, and more successful careers in the trades.

WOW! What an incredible turnout for our 2nd Annual Build and Bloom event!

Thanks to the generous support of Capps Home Building Center, participants from across the Roanoke Valley joined Build Smart Institute on Saturday for a fun, hands-on introduction to building while creating their own mini cold-frame greenhouses alongside industry professionals.

Events like Build and Bloom help introduce community members of all ages to the skilled trades in a welcoming and supportive environment, giving participants the opportunity to build confidence, learn new skills, and explore hands-on construction experiences.

We’re also grateful to Local Environmental Agriculture Project-LEAP for joining us to share information about community gardens and local involvement opportunities, and to everyone who supported our raffle fundraiser, helping raise funds for the Build U Scholarship Fund!
