Someone I love just dropped me off at school this morning.
I walked through the door and there it was. My favorite spot. A colorful little circle on the carpet just waiting for me.
I found my circle, sat down criss cross applesauce, and looked around at all my friends.
Some of us are still learning how to say goodbye without crying. Some of us run through the door without looking back. Some of us need one more hug, one more kiss, or just a little extra reassurance.
And that’s okay. Because we’re all learning here.
I might only be three or four years old but I’m doing some pretty big things.
I’m learning how to make friends. How to share. How to use my words when my feelings get too big. How to be brave when something feels new. How to try again when I don’t get something right the first time.
And sometimes, I’m learning that it’s okay to miss the people I love while still having the best day ever.
Miss Lisa knows that.
She knows when I need a helping hand, a little encouragement, or someone to remind me that I can do hard things.
She knows my name. She knows my little personality. She notices when I’m having a hard morning, and she celebrates the little victories that might not seem so little to me.
Because here I’m not just another child in a classroom.
I’m somebody’s whole world.
And for a few hours each day the people who love me are trusting this little school to take care of that world.
I don’t understand how big that is yet.
I just know that when I walk into my classroom, I feel safe. I feel loved. I feel like I belong.
I know where my favorite circle is. I know my friends are waiting. I know Miss Lisa will be there to help me learn, laugh, play, and grow.
And when my school day is over, someone who loves me will be waiting to hear all about it.
One day I’ll be too big for this colorful carpet. My little feet won’t fit so perfectly inside those circles anymore. I’ll move on to bigger classrooms, bigger friendships, and bigger adventures.
But right now I’m little and this little school is a pretty big part of my world.
