Cherokee County KS Burn Ban continues!

Despite the urge some may have to burn that small pile of leaves, brush pile, bag of household trash, etc.., please keep in mind a few things:
1) There is a burn ban in Cherokee County. All open burning is unlawful. If a fire is observed, the fire department will be deployed to extinguish the fire and law enforcement will be dispatched to issue a citation.
2) Although you may believe you can contain / control the fire, again, it's unlawful and also, the dry conditions make the fire prone to rapidly spreading and becoming uncontrollable
3) Our area volunteer firefighters have been incredibly busy lately fighting fires that started out small, but spread across mile sections, causing dangerous traffic conditions as smoke blows across roadways. Additionally, those small fires have spread and caused thousands of dollars of damage to crops on adjacent farm fields and threatened homes in the area
4) Spending hours and hours fighting grass fires takes an unnecessary toll on our area firefighters and also takes them out of service from responding to other emergencies, such as house fires or car crashes.

Through a partnership with Project ChildSafe, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office - Kansas has a limited supply of free gun locks available to the community. Residents can pick up a gun lock at the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, 915 East Country Road in Columbus, Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30 pm.
