Student Cell Phone Policy

To support a focused and distraction-free learning environment, student cell phone use is strictly prohibited during the school day from 8:00 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. This includes all instructional time, passing periods, lunch, study hall, and restroom breaks. Students are expected to keep phones powered off and stored for the entirety of the school day. This is in accordance with the 2026 “Cell Phone Ban” law passed by the Kansas legislature.

Students may store their phones and personal electronic communication devices in one of the following approved locations:

Powered off in their vehicle
Powered off in a locker assigned by the office (High School)
Powered off in a storage case located in the office (Middle School)
Powered off and stored in a classroom cubby (Elementary School)

Cell phones may not be carried on a student’s person, visible, or used at any time during school hours unless specifically authorized by administration for an approved educational or medical purpose.

Non allowable personal electronic communication devices includes: mobile or cellular phones, tablets, computers, watches, wireless headphones, earbuds, text messaging devices, personal digital assistants, etc.

Consequences for Violations

1st Offense: Phone confiscated; student assigned 1 hour detention
2nd Offense: Phone confiscated; student assigned Saturday School
3rd Offense: Phone confiscated; student assigned Saturday School. Cell phone returned to student at the conclusion of the school day in the event of up to three violations.
4th Offense: Phone confiscated; student assigned 1-10 days ISS and banned from the use of the cell phone for the remainder of the year. Phone returned to parents/guardian.

Refusal to surrender a phone when requested by a staff member may result in additional disciplinary consequences. The school is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices brought onto campus.

If you need to communicate with your student

Students will have the ability to let their teacher know and/or stop by the office to use the office phone
You can email your student with non-emergent things
You can call the office anytime to get a message to your student

High School Phone Use While on School Trips/Events

The law explicitly prohibits students from accessing or using personal devices during the school day while on campus. In the event of school sponsored trips the expectation will be communicated prior to the trip if personal electronic communication devices will be permitted during travel and while participating in the event.

Kansas State Assessment Results

Dear Riverton Families,

You now have the opportunity to access your child’s 2025-2026 KS Assessment score reports through the secure website called Kite Parent Portal. Kite Parent Portal allows you to view your child’s score reports from all Kansas Assessment Program (KAP) tests including Interim, Summative, DLM, and KELPA.

Students in grades 3-8, 10 and 11 completed KS State Assessments this spring. Through the KITE Parent Portal, parents and guardians are able to access current scores for grades 3-8 and grade 10 as well as historical score reports. These score reports are electronically based on your first/primary contact email on file with the district. A secure access code will be emailed to you after following the directions in the video below.

To get started, please watch this introductory video to learn all about using Parent Portal: https://vimeo.com/498441421

When you are ready, access Parent Portal at https://parentportal.kiteaai.org. Use the email account that you have on file with the school to log in. You will then be emailed an access code that is valid for 24 hours. You may also find the KAP Parent Portal Overview helpful.

For help in understanding your child’s scores, the KAP Parent Portal Guide provides a walkthrough of the student’s report. Please keep in mind that assessments are just one of the many measures teachers consider when gauging student progress. Performance on assessments can easily be impacted by something as simple as a student not feeling well on the day of the assessment.

Please note that 11th grade Science Test scores are not available due to the following (per KSDE):

• “The new science assessment did not perform as expected and will not provide an accurate measure of your student’s performance.”
• “The state cannot provide performance levels, such as “Level 3: Proficient,” for grade 11 science.”

Paper copies of state assessment scores will be available upon request.

We greatly appreciate each of you and your positive support of your child’s education.

Sincerely,

Linda Wassom
Elementary Assistant Principal
District Test Coordinator
