Europe is quietly admitting something big: screens may have gone too far in the classroom. đź“š
Across countries like Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, France, and Italy, schools are now bringing back printed books, handwriting, and fewer digital devices after growing concerns over falling reading skills, shorter attention spans, and too much screen time.
Sweden has pushed to reintroduce physical textbooks and limit phones in classrooms. Denmark is investing heavily in printed books after years of paperless learning. Finland is strengthening handwriting in primary schools. France, Italy, and Norway are also scaling back parts of digital-first education.
The reason is simple: more screens did not always mean better learning.
Studies have shown that students often understand and remember more when reading on paper compared to screens. At the same time, literacy scores have dropped across parts of Europe, with many teenagers now struggling with basic reading skills.
For years, schools rushed toward tablets, laptops, and digital classrooms.
Now, some of the world’s most advanced countries are going back to something older, slower, and surprisingly powerful: Books. Pens. Paper. Focus.
