Dear STEM Families!

A National PTA “School of Excellence” survey was sent out at the end of 2021 to measure STEM’s effectiveness at (1) welcoming all families, (2) communicating effectively, (3) supporting student success, (4) speaking up for every child, (5) sharing power, and (6) collaborating with the community.

We wanted to share with you some of the results of the survey and how STEM has responded, when possible, to your suggestions. Some suggestions, such as face-to-face meetings with teachers, more field trips and allowing volunteers on campus, could not be addressed due to Covid restrictions from the District.

One result from the survey was the desire for increased communication to parents, which resulted in Mr. Standerfer publishing a biweekly newsletter, ‘Android Bytes’, giving updated information of middle school and high school calendars and other useful information. He began hosting ’Coffee Break with the Principal’ where parents are encouraged to join a virtual meeting to learn about STEM happenings and to ask questions.

Your main concerns were wanting to see existing campus improvements and progress toward STEM High at UCR. Stay tuned for continued updates on both fronts! In addition, families will be glad to know that STEM will be implementing a more consistent class schedule for the 2022-2023 year.

Families were curious about after school programs and wondered if we could expand sports, clubs, homework assistance and tutoring. This year there were two after-school sports programs; track and field and basketball coached by STEM staff. We might be able to have more options if we have some parent coach volunteers. As for tutoring, Android Bytes highlights many opportunities for before/after school and lunchtime tutoring, by both teachers and students. Our multiple lunchtime and after-school clubs will be back in force next year.

Parents showed interest in mental health support and team building. Several times during the year, emails went out to families encouraging students to participate in small counseling groups and peer-to-peer talking circles.

Lastly, families asked about ways to show school spirit which has been challenging with all the COVID restrictions. However, we were able to have a consistent and delicious Dine-Out fundraiser every month where people could gather and support STEM outside of school. Android Bytes also listed several events during the school day, including spirit days and dances, for our students to show school spirit and enjoy their time at school.

So...all that said, let's see how we did. Please access the QR code or web-link below to take the final survey no later than 3:00 pm, Friday, May 20, 2022. Our results will be sent to National PTA in hopes of being awarded the distinction of a PTA "School of Excellence". I, personally, am just thrilled that we were able to make a much better STEM experience for all involved!!!

Senior Spotlight 2022!

Carter Keyworth plans to go into the field of agriculture, and live quietly on a farm. Carter helped build the greenhouse. Although it still has “the structural and moral integrity of a printer,” “working with good friends made the load lighter.” Carter’s favorite staff member is Mrs. Murray, “for being real, for making school enjoyable.” Carter's hobbies include plants, writing, history, and cooking; his clubs include Green Team, Link Crew, and Bring Change to Mind.

Senior Spotlight 2022!

Elbert Pham plans to major in Psychology and get his PhD at Oxford. Elbert is the founder of the former Tea Club. He likes “history, philosophy, and literature… piano, reading, cooking, painting” among other academic subjects. Elbert wants to write a book, “perhaps one Murray can teach one day.” He enjoys sharing his love of history with Mr. Ponce and philosophy and literature with Mrs. Murray. Elbert advises his underclassmen to “get to know your teachers and peers. What makes Stem unique is its warmth and collegial atmosphere.”
