Over the summer, J.C. Thompson (BAT, 2027) had the opportunity to preach his exegesis passage from Dr. Dan’s Biblical Interpretation class, Romans 12:1–8, at Valley Baptist Church. He also helped relaunch the youth group and teach through a series in John.

Did you know Dr. Andrés Vera (Associate Professor of New Testament) also serves as the Pastor of Young Adults at Fellowship Church in Beaumont? He says, "One of the things I love about this ministry is that I get to continue doing what I love at CBU, which is spending time with young adults, only I get to do it in the context of my church. Removing the deadlines, exams, and papers and keeping sweet time in the Bible, discipleship, and community, makes my pastoral role at Fellowship a genuine joy, and our weekly meetings one of the highlights of my week."

This summer, Hannah Langford (BAT, 2029) served as a Youth Intern at her home church, Alderwood Community. She led small groups and worship for the middle school and high school camps.

Jeremy Byrd (BAT, 2027) volunteered as a Young Life leader for a high school summer camp. He got to share the gospel with many students. For some, it was their first time hearing the good news.

For a number of years, Dr. Mooney also served as Pastor of Teaching and Vision at Redeemer Baptist Church here in Riverside! Here is the encouragement he consistently gives to both church members and students: "Following Jesus is a group effort - like climbing a mountain. There should always be people ahead of you, who are willing to pull you along, behind you who you should encourage and assist, and others walking together beside you. Nobody climbs alone!"

We are always encouraged to see our students serve others during their summer break!
- Conner Hernandez (BAT, 2029) had the joy of helping plant Seasons Church in Beaumont, which will open its doors in September.
- Macy Lacanlale (BAT, 2026), Eddie Garcia (BAT, 2028), and Carson Beaty (BAT, 2029) had the opportunity to serve together as youth leaders at Immanuel Baptist Church's summer camp.
- Ricky Vides (BAT, 2029) served as the English Campus Pastor at Anchor Bethesda Church in Santa Ana. He is grateful for the opportunity to point people to Jesus and help them grow in their relationship with Him.

Did you know Dr. John Gill (Professor of Christian Studies) also serves as the Pastor of Education at Redeemer Baptist Church in Riverside? We asked him how serving as a pastor has shaped the way he teaches and mentors students. He told us, "Pastoring extends beyond the weekly gathering and the pulpit, moving into lives with various circumstances, challenges, and joys. In a similar way, although each of my classes has a set schedule, students’ lives involve so much more. Therefore, I want to care for them in a way that takes their lives into account, both in how I engage with them and how I challenge them to consider the ways that theology informs their lives outside of the classroom."

Dr. Brian Tung (Assistant Professor of Theology) also serves as Minister at Large at his church, Mandarin Baptist Church of LA in Alhambra. He says, "Serving as a pastor has helped me to see the classroom not merely as a place to impart knowledge but to encounter God through His Word. The goal is never just to learn facts about the Bible but to meet with Jesus, draw nearer to Him, and be formed into His image. Dr. Damon Horton (Director of Intercultural Studies) has been awarded a grant from the American Bible Society for his proposal "Exploring Podcast-Based Scripture Engagement Among Generation Z." Only four projects were selected nationwide, including two renewals. Congratulations, Dr. Horton!
