I wrote this poem several years ago in a moment of parental despair as I stood by helplessly witnessing my son's struggle with epilepsy. For 10 years he has valiantly experienced the physical exhaustion, emotional pain, tests and drugs and stigmas associated with this affliction without any complaint and through it all he has the winningest smile! We are walking in honor of Wyatt and all the other millions of people living with epilepsy today. Please join us in our efforts to find a cure! THE THIEF
It
I hate it!
It comes in the night
like a thief
Disturbing our silent slumber
Robbing sleep, stealing trust, draining strength
Attacking with jolts of electricity
Searing and scarring
Paralyzing and painful
Fleeing as silently and swiftly as it came
Leaving the body in a heap of sweat, exhaustion, confusion, bewilderment, anger and sadness
Disoriented and distrustful
It has stolen my child
and his childhood...
No, Not entirely
But in the wake of the path carved by the searing tentacles of rogue neuronal firings is a boy whimpering in the dawn
The day brings unease, tip-toeing, cautious glances
Will impatience, obstinance and demands color our day?
Will we be showered instead with grins, gleaming eyes, hugs and humor...
And then for a brief moment there it is a glimmer of recognition
His eyes sparkle, lips part in a strained smile, we hug
