Victoria Downs leapt into action on February 17th to help a passerby who was stopped out front of the campus, no longer breathing. The man had been a passenger in a car traveling down Magnolia when he passed out, prompting the driver to pull over at the University main entrance and call for help. While Safety Services team members were en route, College of Nursing student Victoria gave instruction in CPR and aided in chest compressions for the victim who remained unconscious. Student worker Avery Easterling and Safety Service team members coordinated care until Riverside Fire Department arrived to take over the scene, administering medicine that revived the man before transporting him to the hospital.
Director of Safety Services John Freese honored students Victoria and Avery for their exemplary actions. During a visit to the College of Nursing campus, Victoria, along with officers of the Safety Services Team were awarded a commendation for their acts of valor.
“I commend these Safety Services Team members and Victoria Downs for their calm, and coordinated response that contributed to the saving of the victim’s life. Their professionalism and care for a citizen in need glorifies God and brings honor to CBU.” – John Freese
Victoria’s quick thinking, courage, and compassion stand as a powerful testament to the character of our College of Nursing students and the profound impact one person can make in a moment of crisis.

Recap: Celebrating our Standardized Participants
At CBU College of Nursing, simulation is an essential part of shaping confident, compassionate future nurses. Our Standardized Patients play a remarkable role in that journey—bringing clinical scenarios to life, portraying patients and their loved ones with authenticity, and offering students a safe space to learn, grow, and refine their skills.
In this season of gratitude, the Simulation staff and faculty was happy to honor the Standardized Participants (SP’s) with a celebration and awards extending our heartfelt gratitude for their dedication, empathy, and the invaluable impact they have on the student experience. Thank you for being an integral part of the CBU College of Nursing community and helping us prepare the next generation of nurses with excellence and grace. 💛🩺
