After months of writing, designing, and field testing… they're finally here! 🌲🦉

I'll be at the MÂCHÉ Homeschool Convention tomorrow with the brand-new, hot-off-the-press First Expedition Edition of the Evidence Explorers Field Guide and Companion Workbook!

Together, the Field Guide and Companion Workbook bring real scientific rigor to the trail in a way young explorers can understand and enjoy. We wrapped up our Journey Homeschool Co-op classes at the Kinnickinnic River this week 🌊

Students returned to the stream, finding caddisflies, snails, mini crayfish, and scuds—using these clues to assess the health of the water. We even met a fisherman along the trail using a caddisfly to fish, bringing their learning to life in the best way.

And of course, the walk back was a highlight too—the kids earning plenty of honks from passing cars with their enthusiastic arm pumps 😊

Grateful for a wonderful year and all the growth I’ve seen in these young explorers. 🌿

🌲 The Mystery of the Tree Drummer 🌲
Our Evidence Explorers took on a new case this week—and it had them looking up into the trees! We investigated the incredible world of woodpeckers, asking one BIG question: How does a bird hammer on trees all day without getting hurt?

After learning about their amazing features, we headed outside to search for clues—and sure enough, our explorers spotted signs of woodpecker activity right on the church/school grounds! 🪵🔍

Back inside, each student chose one woodpecker feature to investigate more deeply—from shock-absorbing skulls to extra-long tongues and powerful climbing feet. Next, they’ll use their discoveries to design a Creator-inspired product.

🐜 Tiny Creatures, Big Discoveries 🌲

Our Evidence Explorers were out on the trail this week, searching for signs of ant life and figuring out what “jobs” the ants were doing. We spotted trails, teamwork, and even some impressive strength in action!

One highlight—Explorer Charlie bravely got close to an active spot on a freshly cut tree, and one tiny (but very determined!) ant rushed up to defend its colony by attempting to nip his finger. The students quickly decided it must be a “soldier ant”… Explorer Ingrid added, “I bet the queen ant will knight him for protecting the colony from a giant!” 👑🐜 Hurrahs all around! 😂

Moments like this remind us how much there is to discover when we slow down and look closely.

Evidence Explorers Design Lab: Spider Web Engineers!

Today our Evidence Explorers investigated one of nature’s most remarkable materials—spider silk. Even though it’s thinner than a human hair, it’s incredibly strong and flexible, allowing spiders to build webs that can stretch, hold tension, and stop flying insects mid-air.

After studying how real spider webs are designed—with strong anchor lines, radiating spokes, and spiral capture threads—the students took on a Design Lab challenge. Working in pairs, they used sticks and twine to build their own spider webs in the woods and tested which designs held up best!

It was fun to see the creativity and teamwork as they discovered just how clever a spider’s engineering really is.

❄️ Snow Science in 50° Weather?! Yes, please.

Today in Evidence Explorers, we studied the hidden structure of snow and water. Every snowflake follows the same six-sided molecular rule — yet no two are identical.

Over a century ago, Wilson Bentley captured snowflakes under a microscope and revealed this breathtaking symmetry to the world (see a few of the pics below).

That same hexagonal structure allows ice to float on lakes — protecting fish through the winter.

Small invisible rules. Big life-preserving impact.

Even on a 50° February day, we found evidence of masterful design woven into creation. 🌲✨

🌲 Nature’s Engineers in Action!

Today our students learned about some incredible builders in creation — beavers, birds, spiders, and termites — and then headed outdoors to become engineers themselves. Using only natural materials found on the ground, they designed cozy little homes for local creatures, thinking carefully about wind direction, predators, shelter, and size.

From tiny field mouse hideaways to rabbit homes, each structure showed creativity, problem-solving, and thoughtful design. I love watching these young explorers learn not just what animals build — but why their designs work so well. 🦉

🐾 Winter Tracks & Whodunit Fun at Woodsy Wild! 🐾

Yesterday, our Evidence Explorers put on their detective hats and dove into the fascinating world of winter animal tracks!
We started indoors, where students learned how to identify the tracks, movement patterns, and behaviors of common winter animals we see right here in our area - asking good detective questions like “Who was here?” and “What were they doing?”

Then we headed outside—and even though the snow is beginning to melt, it turned out to be the perfect track-making conditions! Each student made their very best boot track, labeled it, and then we launched into our own “Whodunit?” boot track mystery. Students worked together to figure out which mystery students made a certain row of tracks and what clues gave them away. It was great fun watching the students carefully examine the “evidence” and use their detective skills to solve the mystery!

The students then explored the property to search of real animal tracks—and they were thrilled to find most of the prints we had studied together.

Learning outside, thinking like scientists, and discovering the clues nature leaves behind—this is what Woodsy Wild is all about. 🌲💚

🌲 A New Chapter for Woodsy Wild 🌲

I’m thrilled to share that Woodsy Wild is planting additional roots in Spooner, WI with a Northwoods Nature Post coming soon.

While Woodsy Wild continues to serve families in the Hudson / River Falls area, we’ve also just closed on a piece of commercial land in Spooner that will become a future home base — a place rooted in nature, learning, and community.

I’m deeply grateful for all of the families and supporters who have been part of the Woodsy Wild journey so far. I can’t wait to share more as the trail unfolds. 💚🌿
