Are you ready for fall bird migration? 🐦😍🌎

BirdCast is! Today BirdCast scientists issued their first forecast maps for the 2026 fall bird migration season, and local dashboard stats from last night showing us how many birds flew over Wisconsin. (257,700 after midnight).

BirdCast scientists use weather radar and a model based on 23 years of bird migration data to predict bird migration intensity given a particular weather forecast. Warmer colors on the maps correspond to more intense bird migration.

Want to learn more about the science behind these forecasts and a related application, Lights Out Alerts?

Join us on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 7-8:30 p.m. CST for a free webinar with Dr. Kyle Horton of Purdue University, one of the scientists who developed and launched the first nationwide bird migration forecasts for the U.S. and Lights Out warning tools. He'll talk about the bird migration forecasts and Lights Out Alerts.
