Literacy coaches from across southern Ohio came together in September as part of the ReadOhio credentialing process. Using materials developed by ExcelinEd and the Florida Center for Reading Research, coaches participated in collaborative learning focused on strengthening literacy coaching practices and supporting educators across the region.

Credentialing will take place across nine sessions, with September’s session focusing on building strong teacher-coach relationships. Coaches explored the importance of interpersonal skills, understanding their role, being visible in schools, establishing trust, and creating opportunities for collaboration.

The push back on institutional control of personal, cultural, or private family time presents a conflict for school districts that cannot be ignored. A school may view school attendance as necessary to maximize state funding, protect standardized testing data, and ensure academic benchmarks. A family perspective may prioritize child mental health, family togetherness, and freedom over a rigid seat-time schedule. The pushback occurs when families feel that institutions are prioritizing compliance over human relationships and community well-being. Illness, family or home challenges, trauma, lack of transportation, housing issues, inequitable access to services, and food insecurity are often cited as barriers to student attendance and academic achievement. The National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) suggests that complex problems require education leaders to reflect deeply on how policies, systems, and school climate might be transformed to meet all students and families where they are. The post-pandemic normalization of remote learning fundamentally altered how families view education models. Parents now prioritize mental health days, family travel, and cultural milestones over a perfect attendance record. What can school districts do to bridge the gap between institutional structure and the need to celebrate family dynamics, culture, and tradition?

It was a beautiful day for history, community, and storytelling as more than 250 visitors gathered in Gallipolis for the 5th Annual Cemetery Walk, “Here Lies the History of Gallipolis.” Living historians and local experts dressed in period attire brought the stories of 15 historical figures with ties to Gallia County to life as visitors explored the Pine Street and Pine Street Colored Cemeteries. Guests were welcomed by members of the Our House Museum, Ohio Valley Bank, and John Gee Black Historical Center before visiting the marked gravesites at their own pace. Attendees also enjoyed festive cookies and takeaways provided by GVESC.

The annual Cemetery Walk is truly a community effort and was made possible through the support of the Cadot-Blessing Camp #126 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, Our House Museum, GVESC, Gallia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, John Gee Black Historical Center, Gallipolis Railroad Freight Station Museum, and Bossard Memorial Library.

On August 5 and 6, 2026, GVESC hosted its annual Technology Academy: Build Now, Use Later, focused on practical classroom uses of Canva, computational thinking and coding, Google Workspace, Gemini, and NotebookLM. Educators explored Canva’s creative and AI-powered tools and learned ways to use technology to increase student engagement, problem-solving, and content-area learning. Participants also experimented with Micro:bit coding and received their own Micro:bit to continue exploring and creating. Educators explored Gemini and NotebookLM for lesson planning, differentiation, podcasts, flashcards, videos, presentations, and other instructional resources. One participant shared, “AI doesn't have to be scary, and it can make my life easier.” The hands-on format gave educators time to create resources they could immediately use in their classrooms. Participants left with new ideas for saving time, creating engaging materials, and incorporating coding and AI into instruction.

Students in grades 4–12 represented our region at the National Beta Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, June 16–27, 2026, showcasing their academic skills, creativity, talents, and leadership on a national stage. Students from Addaville, Hannan Trace, Southwestern, and Vinton Elementary Schools, South Gallia Middle/High School, and River Valley Middle/High School competed in events ranging from academics and quiz bowl to robotics, talent, cake decorating, and arts and crafts.

GVESC’s David Moore also represented the region at the convention. Moore serves as Council Chair for the Ohio Beta Council and is one of only 18 directors serving the National Beta Club. GVESC is proud to celebrate these students for representing their schools and communities while demonstrating the achievement, character, leadership, and service that National Beta promotes.
