If your athletes aren’t talking to themselves… they should be.
🗣️🧠🏆

Try these three tips to get started with self talk for athletes:
1️⃣ Switch from vague hype like “let’s go” to specific cues like “drive the knees” or “watch the ball.”

2️⃣ If it feels strange, use the third person. Address yourself by your own name or as “you” instead of “I” to create mental distance and reduce stress.

3️⃣ Keep it brief. Create short, one-word or two-word triggers so your brain can process them instantly mid-action. Don’t make this harder than it is.

📢 Start talking to yourself! The best athletes already are!

I taught these same tools to my students.
⚡️When I was a teacher covering the in-school suspension room, I knew better than to lead with research. If I’d started quoting studies and brain science, they would’ve 100% thrown something at me and probably dropped an F-bomb while doing it. I kept it real. I told them about my son, how he has ADHD, how he was getting in trouble sometimes, and how these tools were helping him chill and stay in control. I simply showed them how these tool work in real life.

🧠That’s the same approach I take now with athletes, teams, educators, and corporate groups. No fluff. No icebreakers just to fill time. No role plays that make everyone roll their eyes.

😂I cracked up this past spring when a teacher said to me, “I love that they brought you back. I’d rather lick dirt than do an icebreaker or another role play. You keep it real. Why don’t we always have former teachers present?”

That comment stuck with me, because it confirmed what I see over and over: people are hungry for practical, real-world tools delivered by someone who understands their world. High performers don’t need to be talked down to, and they don’t need to be “fixed.” They need to be equipped. They need someone to show them how to reset after a mistake, quiet the noise in their head, and step into pressure with a clear mind and steady body. That’s why I TEACH in the Champion Within programs. I teach performance and emotional regulation in a way that makes sense in business, in your sport and in the classroom not just in theory.

➡️If you’re tired of surface-level “motivational” talks, I’m here to TEACH you and the people you lead handle pressure differently with tools that are simple, real, and actually usable in the moment. In today’s podcast, I’m sharing three personal stories about how pressure has impacted me:

🧠 A college athlete's inner monologue: “I'd replay that one mistake over and over again.”

⚠️ The reality of toxic workplaces: "She covered herself in Vaseline before she came into the locker room, so we couldn’t grab her…”

❤️ An honest moment in motherhood: “When you’re a Mom and you’re trying to help your kid be successful, you’re going to to try ANYTHING!”

All three stories have the same lesson ➡️ The goal isn’t to eliminate pressure, but instead to learn the skills to navigate through it.

20 years in education.

⚡️90% of the kids, families, and fellow teachers were absolutely amazing. I loved them deeply, and they are a massive part of why I am who I am today.

⚡️I’ve stayed quiet about most of the details of my exit from teaching because I never wanted to diminish or offend the incredible humans I spent two decades serving beside.

But there’s a side to my story I haven’t shared. The remaining 10% poisoned the environment. No matter how loud I (and others) spoke, it was met with deaf ears and nodding heads. Nothing changed, and there were minimal to zero consequences.

➡️ I walked away carrying immense guilt. I had guilt for leaving a career I loved, for not being there for the kids who still needed me, and for not being able to fix a broken system. The daily reality left me trauma-bonded to the chaos, and I had to step away simply to heal myself.

⚡️When people ask me what I do now and how I do it so well, I often still say, “I’m a teacher.” It’ll always be true.

➡️ The things I’ve seen, survived, and de-escalated go far beyond standard educator training.

For years, PR professionals, podcast hosts, and podcast producers have pushed me to put this story out there.
💬 “Share your backstory…”

I didn’t know how or when I wanted to do it.

❤️ Holding back these experiences means holding back the very reason why I am an elite Mental Performance Coach.

❤️Surviving that level of psychological burnout didn’t break me; it gave me an advanced masterclass in human behavior, high-stakes boundary setting, crisis management, and emotional resilience.

⚡️I didn’t just study these strategies in a textbook; I built them in the trenches of a toxic system.

😂Netflix isn’t actually dropping a documentary about my life (yet), but I am officially sharing the real, unfiltered version right here on my page (mostly on Instagram) & on my podcast.

🎬🍿 If Hollywood does come knocking…don’t worry, to my absolute favorites out there, your secrets are safe. Names will be changed.
And if I really loved you, I’m personally requesting incredibly good-looking actors to play you in the reenactments. 😉

The mental training doesn’t stop when our session ends.
🧠⚡️❤️

People see the competition. They don’t always see what happens before it. 🧡🖤

⚡️Before my teams take the floor, we slow everything down.

⚡️We breathe.
⚡️We reset.
⚡️We visualize the routine.
⚡️We prepare for the moments that matter most.

➡️ The support doesn’t end there. Between sessions, I’m just a text away for coaches and my 1:1 athletes. Whether it’s pre-competition nerves, overthinking, or needing a quick mindset reset, they have tools and support when they need it most.

🏆 That’s what mental training is all about. It’s not a one-time session. It’s showing up consistently so athletes can show up confidently.

The goal isn’t to eliminate nerves. It’s to know exactly what to do when they show up.

❤️ “I’m rooting for you, always!” Isn’t just a cute thing I say or fun line I drop at the end of my emails… it’s who I am. I embody it.

Ready to give your athletes the mental edge they need and the support that’s always there?!
Send me a DM. ❤️🏆⚡️

Much love to Coach Brianna & Coach Elisa for your words about working together. 🧡🖤

😤Most team drama isn’t just “drama” it’s a culture problem.

When athletes aren’t taught how to handle conflict, they learn to avoid it, explode, or vent online. Unfortunately that follows them onto the field/court/on the mat, into the locker room, to their job and into their relationships.
⚡️It’s EVERYWHERE.

🏆 The good news: conflict resolution can be taught like any other skill.

On today’s podcast, I chat about: Team Culture: How to Squash Toxic Cliques

Here are 3 things that can change team culture fast:
⚡️set clear, non-negotiable standards
⚡️teach athletes how to pause, listen, and use “I” statements
⚡️train captains to lead culture, not just represent talent

❤️ Healthy teams don’t happen by accident. They’re built with consistency, accountability, and emotional skills that athletes can use for life. It’s work and it’s worth it.

What’s one team culture issue you’ve seen most often?

Every perfectly timed stunt, sharp motion, and hit-zero routine is powered by something you can’t see on the scoresheet: MINDSET.

The latest Champion Within podcast episode, dives into what really drives consistent performance in cheer especially when the pressure is on. Cheer is demanding and unforgiving. One missed count, one shaky grip, one moment of doubt can change everything. Physical training matters, but mindset is what shows up when the music starts.

I chat with Coach Elisa and Coach Brianna and break down how top programs intentionally build:
• Mental toughness
• Strong, purposeful team culture
• Clear leadership and communication
• Trust between athletes, coaches (including the mental performance coach), and parents

If you’re a coach, parent, athletic director, or you play a key role in creating this environment for athletes, you'll learn from this chat and steal something you can use.

Listen to the episode to learn practical ways to build lasting mindset and culture for your athletes this season. Tune in and start developing the champion within your team.

Character first, athleticism second. That is how champions are made.

Through our CHAMPION WITHIN programs at Danu, we focus heavily on the life lessons that come along with sports. More often than not, those lessons are found in everyday, small moments.

Today, on Father’s Day (and every day) I am incredibly grateful to my Dad and my husband for the impact they continue to have from coaching to teaching life lessons.

To all the dads, grandfathers (aka "Pop Pop" by my kids!), coaches, and the men who take on roles as father figures: your presence completely changes the game for athletes. You are helping build the framework for future leaders.

❤️ We see you, we appreciate you, and we celebrate your impact today and every single day.

❤️ Happy Father’s Day!
