One of our favorite moments in class is the Growing Friendship Wish.

Children learn it with sign language β€” one word at a time β€” until the whole phrase becomes something they do with their hands and their voices together:
"May all I think, say and do not hurt anyone and help everyone."

What's remarkable isn't that children can learn it. It's how seriously they take it. They want to get the signs right. They want to say the words carefully. They understand, even at four years old, that it means something.

That's the thing about giving children real language for kindness β€” they rise to it every time. 🌱

Something we hear from parents a lot: "My child has so much energy β€” I don't think mindfulness is for them."

The children who have the hardest time sitting still are often the ones who benefit most from mindfulness practice. Not because it forces them to be still β€” but because it gives them tools to notice what's happening inside before they react to it.

That's the whole idea: not perfection, not stillness for its own sake. Just a little more space between the feeling and the response. Even in a three-year-old, that's learnable.

Something we're exploring for this summer: mindfulness workshops for families and young children β€” a chance to experience what we do in schools in a more open, drop-in setting.

Nothing scheduled yet, but we're looking for the right space and the right partners. If you run a yoga studio, wellness center, or community space in Bergen County and this sounds interesting, we'd genuinely love to hear from you.
More to come as it takes shape. πŸ™

Excited about the schools we're connecting with for fall. 🌱

Our mindfulness programming β€” Mindful Bodies, Mindful Listening, Mindful Breathing, and the Growing Friendship Wish β€” fits naturally into preschool and elementary classrooms. Weekly sessions uilt around the attention spans and developmental needs of children ages 2–12.

If you're a director, educator, or parent at a Bergen County school curious about what this looks like in practice, we'd love to talk.

Every class starts the same way.

Before we start the week's activities, we take a moment to arrive. Criss-cross-apple sauce. Hands in our laps. Eyes closed if that feels okay.

We call it Mindful Bodies β€” and it's deceptively simple. For young children, learning to notice what their body feels like right now is a skill, not a given. It's also the foundation for everything else: listening, breathing, being present with others.

The classes who've been working for a while don't need a reminder anymore. They just... settle. That's the whole thing.

Spring classes start April 14 🌱

Spots are still available in our Tuesday morning Musikgarten classes for babies and toddlers β€” but we're keeping things small, so space is limited.

We start every mindfulness class the same way: with a singing bowl. 🎡

One ring. Then we listen β€” really listen β€” until the sound completely disappears.

It sounds simple. For a three-year-old, it's actually hard work. Tracking a sound from beginning to end requires sustained attention, stillness, and a willingness to just... wait. Those are skills, and they're learnable.

We call it Mindful Listening. It's one of three anchors we use to open every class β€” along with Mindful Bodies (noticing how we feel in our bodies) and Mindful Breathing. The repetition is intentional. Ritual creates safety, and safety is where learning happens.

Next time you have a quiet moment at home, try it without the bowl: ask your child to close their eyes and raise their hand when they can't hear any sounds at all. See what happens.

A two-minute activity for the end of the day. 🫧

Ask your child to put one hand on their belly. Take a slow breath in together β€” belly gets bigger. Breathe out β€” belly gets smaller.

That's it. No props needed (though a pinwheel or a feather makes it even more fun).

This comes directly from the mindfulness curriculum we use in class, developed by the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin. The idea is simple: children can learn to pay attention on the inside β€” noticing how their body feels β€” just as naturally as they notice things on the outside.

Two minutes at bedtime. Worth trying.
