Graduate Spotlight: Charquise Smith-Stultz, WTA Class of 2018:

When entering into Warrior Tech, I was extremely nervous about working together with groups of individuals and attempting a different learning style. On top of that, I was nervous about entering the high school world as a whole. After getting involved with Warrior Tech, I fell in love with the program. It became a place I could call home.

The facilitators(teachers) gave us the ability as students to succeed in our groups, but also helped us learn that sometimes to succeed you have to fight through adversity. That has been extremely helpful in my career field now. I am the Student Minister at Cape Fear Christian Church in Wilmington, NC. WTA helped me continue to refine my skills and also learn how to lean on others and the skill sets they have that I do not. I am thankful for the Warrior Tech experience as a whole and still turn to staff from the program today. They weren’t just teachers, but became life long friends that I know I can still call or go to when things are happening in my life now.

Graduate Spotlight: Mohammad Farooq, class of 2018

I was exceedingly nervous during my first project in Warrior Tech Academy (WTA). This was not due to the task at hand. I was nervous having to work with other individuals towards a collective goal. As someone who had always worked solo, the idea of leaving certain parts of a project to others was terrifying. Many years after the fact, I have come to realize that the ability to work with a team is one of the most crucial skills required both in college and in professional careers. Luckily, WTA helped me develop this skill through multiple projects and presentations across my four years in the program.

There is strength in numbers which, in this case, is multiple minds brainstorming and developing a product. During my time at the University of Virginia, I had to work in countless groups on everything from creating simple presentations to developing software for the university, and WTA had prepared me for every instance. Now, as a medical student, I am able to effectively and efficiently collaborate with other students on any task. On a daily basis, I witness doctors collaborating with nurses and other specialists to find solutions for patients’ problems. Warrior Tech Academy is built on the foundation of teamwork, and I am forever thankful for the experience the program and its wonderful educators provided me.

School connectedness occurs when students feel peers and adults in school value and care about their well-being and academic progress. Connectedness includes a supportive sense of belonging at school. The benefits of feeling connected in the school setting last well into adulthood.

Each year at Warrior Tech Academy we conduct a culture survey with our freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Over 93% of our students report feeling a positive sense of belonging and connectedness in our space. This is especially important in light of research conducted by researchers from the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and the Yale Child Study Center in January 2020. They found that nearly 75% of over 21,000 students self-reported negative feelings with school.

Graduate Spotlight: Kristel Hairston, class of 2017

Being a student Warrior Tech benefitted me in many ways, but my growth in communication had to be the most significant. WTA truly helped break me out of my shell and increased my confidence when communicating. I have always been more quiet and reserved in public settings, so I needed the extra push WTA provided when it was time for me to go off to college and even when I started my career!

Through collaboration in groups and presenting in front of my peers, I truly learned the value of positive and effective communication. Now, as a Pediatric Registered Nurse, I am much more comfortable communicating with my patients and their parents. I also don’t feel as intimidated in the times I have to communicate amongst physicians and members of management. I understand now that without solid communication a team can’t run as smoothly! I’m thankful for WTA and for all of the amazing educators of the program who pushed me to new limits and saw something in me that I didn’t see within myself.

We’re excited to have our students back!

Tomorrow is the first day of school and, while it is certainly a different start of school than we’re all used to having, we can’t wait to see our students and those first day of school photos. Students, charge your iPad, get a good night’s sleep, eat a good breakfast in the morning, and get ready to show us all what great learners you are! We are already so proud of you 😍
