Please join us in welcoming Mrs. Megan Papay to the Thomas Heyward Academy family as our new Upper School Science Teacher!
Mrs. Papay brings a unique blend of classroom experience, scientific knowledge, and real-world application to our Upper School program. She has taught students from K3 through high school and previously taught Biology, Honors Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Environmental Science at Charleston Charter School for Math and Science.
A Spartanburg, South Carolina native, Mrs. Papay earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of South Carolina after studying at Western Carolina University, where she developed a love for physics and fly fishing. Her experience in medical, environmental, and scientific fields provides students with valuable connections between classroom concepts and everyday life.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Papay has dedicated more than 20 years to coaching youth soccer and mentoring young athletes throughout the Lowcountry. She enjoys spending time with her husband, Landon, and their three children, McKinley, Lincoln, and Haysley, as well as fishing, boating, creating handmade jewelry, and making lasting memories with family and friends.
Mrs. Papay is passionate about inspiring curiosity, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of science while helping students discover how science shapes the world around them.

Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Alicia Crosby as she begins her new role as Gateway Director at Thomas Heyward Academy!
Mrs. Crosby brings an extraordinary depth of experience to this position, with 30 years in education, including 25 years dedicated to THA students and families. Throughout her career, she has taught K4, K5, served as a K-Wing Lead Teacher, taught middle school History and ELA, high school English, and art for students in grades Kβ12.
Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Crosby has made a lasting impact through her involvement across campus. She has coached THA volleyball for 20 years, middle school boysβ and girlsβ basketball, and varsity boysβ basketball. She has also served in numerous leadership roles, including Junior Class Sponsor, Homecoming Director, Prom Sponsor, and Yearbook Advisor. In the past, she served as Gala Director, Rebel Overtime & Summertime Director and accreditation team leader.
As Gateway Director, Mrs. Crosby is excited to continue building upon the strong foundation of the program while helping lead exciting improvements, including new staff, curriculum enhancements, facility upgrades, and playground improvements.
Her passion for education, creativity, leadership, and commitment to students has touched countless lives over the years, and we are excited to see the impact she will continue to make in this new role.

Please join us in congratulating Mrs. Tara Rex as she begins her new role as Learning Enrichment Assistant at Thomas Heyward Academy!
For nearly four years, Mrs. Rex has been a valued member of our Lower School team, serving students and faculty with dedication, compassion, and a heart for helping others succeed. Throughout her time at THA, she has supported students in the classroom, assisted faculty across the division, and provided small-group literacy intervention to help students strengthen foundational reading skills and build confidence.
In her new role, Mrs. Rex will partner with classroom teachers to provide targeted interventions in both math and language arts, helping reinforce classroom instruction, close learning gaps, and support student achievement.
As a THA graduate herself, Mrs. Rex understands the importance of a strong educational foundation and is passionate about helping every student reach their full potential.
We are excited to see the positive impact she will continue to make in the lives of our students and families as she takes on this new opportunity.

Thomas Heyward Academy is pleased to announce that Mrs. Kate Lucas has been named Assistant Head of School with her primary focus on Lower School Leadership!
Mrs. Lucas is already a familiar face on campus, having faithfully served our students and families as THAβs Librarian, Reading Specialist and Testing Coordinator. Her passion for literacy, student success, and supporting teachers has made a lasting impact on our school community, and we are excited to see her step into this important leadership role.
With more than ten years of experience in education, a background in child development, and certifications in Early Childhood Education, Reading, and Literacy Coaching, Mrs. Lucas brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm.
Mrs. Lucas is committed to fostering a positive learning culture where students and educators can thrive while continuing to strengthen the strong academic foundation that makes THA special.

Mrs. Megan Congleton β our 2023β2024 Middle/High School Teacher of the Year β is embarking on an exciting new journey as Upper School History Teacher.
After three years of excellence in the English Department, Mrs. Congleton is channeling her passion for leadership and government into a new classroom. She'll be teaching History, Government, and Geography to our Upper School students, bringing the same dedication and care that earned her our school's highest teaching honor.
A Patrick Henry Academy alum and USC grad with a BA in Art History, she's got the background, the heart, and the drive to make Upper School History something students will look forward to. History, Government, Geography β she's got it all covered.
