A child can read smoothly and still struggle to understand what they just read, while another child reads slowly but grasps every detail. That is why it helps to look a little closer.⁠

There are three key areas to pay attention to. Fluency, meaning can your child move through age-appropriate material at a comfortable pace without stopping constantly to sound out words. Vocabulary, meaning when they hit an unfamiliar word, do they use context clues to figure out the meaning? And comprehension, meaning after reading, can they explain what the text was about, identify the main idea, or make simple inferences?⁠
Grade-level benchmarks are a useful reference, but every child develops at their own pace. What matters most is consistent progress. More confidence over time, deeper engagement with what they are reading, those are the signs to watch for.⁠
