If you are an incoming student with interest in living in a community that promotes advocacy for a safe environment for gender identity, gender expression and s*xuality the Colonel Pride Living Learning Community (LLC) may be for you!

A LLC gives students with similar interests an opportunity to live on the same floor of a Residence Hall. This is a great way for members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies to work together to promote inclusion on campus and find support. Indicate interest on your Housing Application.

Applications completed before June 1 will receive priority review. To learn more about Colonel Pride, visit our website: https://housing.eku.edu/colonel-pride.

Black q***r people have contributed to both black history and q***r history. Within both histories, we often forget acts of resistance that black q***r people perform. LGBT at EKU recognizes the unique contributions of all black people of color and wants to extend a heartfelt message: Happy Black History Month!

If you’re interested in learning more about black q***r people in history, take a look at our sources below!

Coming out can be a dangerous process for LGBTQIA+ individuals across the globe. When someone comes out to you, you want to be prepared, poised, and ready to commit yourself to being an ally. Pictured in the graphics are some best possible practices to keep in mind when someone comes out to you; we hope you’ll use them.

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs honors the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost to violence during the year. During the year, a total of 350 transgender people have been murdered worldwide, a number that is made up primarily of trans women of color. Unfortunately, transgender people face swaths of violence in their personal lives. The murders of trans individuals have devastated transgender communities across the globe; we hope to shed a light on how prevalent violence against trans folx is and what you can do to help. Take a look at our references and learn more about Transgender Day of Remembrance, which takes place every year on November 20, as well as resources that may be able to help.

Trans Awareness Week refers to the week before Trans Day of Remembrance. During the week, we highlight and appreciate the unique contributions that trans individuals bring to society. Transgender individuals face unique challenges around the world such as prejudice, discrimination, and violence. We hope you will take the time to support this week!

From the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs:

Please join EKU as we break ground on our National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza in Carloftis Gardens!

To ensure the health and safety of all in attendance, seating will be 6ft apart and facial coverings are required.

Following this event, at 3pm Eastern Kentucky University will host the inaugural Opportunity Bowl in memory of Dr. Sheila Pressley a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Pressley, who passed away in January of 2020, was the Dean of the College of Health Sciences at Eastern Kentucky University.

She attended Western Carolina University for her undergraduate education, graduating in 1989. The name for the bowl game was a natural fit as EKU is known as a school of opportunity, a point of pride for Pressley.

The two teams will play for the right to hoist the Opportunity Bowl trophy, which is being presented by Dinsmore & Shohl – a full service national law firm with over 650 attorneys. The winning team will receive Opportunity Bowl championship rings and all student-athletes will receive a participant gift, in accordance with NCAA guidelines. The Opportunity Bowl is made possible by corporate sponsors and the city of Richmond, Kentucky.

*** Update for Ceremony:

Due to COVID-19 increase the ceremony will now be limited to 50 in-person guest. There will be an alternative way to participate in the ceremony via online. Updated link to be sent out Friday or email [email protected] for those details.

Another ceremony will be scheduled once the Divine 9 Plaza has complete construction.

Inters*x Day of Remember, or Inters*x Solidarity Day, takes place on November 8th each year. The date is both meant to commemorate Herculine Barbin, a French inters*x individual whose memoirs were published by Michel Foucault, and recognize the unique difficulties that individuals who are inters*x face, such as inters*x ge***al mutilation, issues related to having to pick a side of the binary within s*x and gender concepts, and the medicalization of inters*x bodies.

While there is a distinct lack of data involving outcomes in the inters*x community, the results of procedures related to being inters*x may lead to unintentional, but negative, outcomes. Take a look at the report, provided by the Human Rights Watch, for an in-depth analysis on inters*x individuals and one of the unique issues that inters*x individuals may face.
