Think archives are just old documents for history majors? Think again!

October is American Archives Month, and we’re celebrating the many ways EKU’s Research Center for Special Collections & Archives connects students, faculty, researchers, and our community with the stories preserved in our collections.

Using the Archives isn’t just for looking backward, either. It provides resources for asking questions, making connections, and understanding the people, places, and experiences that have shaped our region and continue to shape our university and community today.

EKU’s Special Collections & Archives can support
coursework and research across disciplines, genealogy and family history, community research, creative projects, and so much more.

You don’t have to be a historian to use the Archives! Have a question or an interest you want to explore? EKU RCSCA just may be able to help you investigate it.

Happy October, Colonels! October is American Archives Month. Each October, we like to highlight our university archive and the importance of archives in preserving our heritage and history. Our goal for the month is to share with you what archives are, how you can use them, and how you can engage with us throughout the year!
Here are some things you can look forward to on this page for Archives Month 2026:
-Electronic Records Day 2026!
-”Archive Finds”: This series will highlight some of the various interesting discoveries we have made while working in the archives. There will be a variety of materials featured, and who knows? Maybe you’ll find something new!
-What are the archives? How can they be used? We’ll answer this and more in our mini-blog! Stick around to learn about our specific archive and the ways that you can use our materials that may not necessarily be tied to your history project.
-Ask an Archivist Day is October 14th! You can submit your questions here or over on our Instagram (). Ask us anything! You can ask about staff, specific collections, our books/manuscripts…anything! We can’t wait to see what you have in mind!
-Our Main Event! Join us on October 22, from 4-6pm! We will be celebrating EKU Research Center for Special Collections and Archives 50th anniversary by featuring items from our collections, hosting a panel discussion on the history and use of our archive, and more!

…And so much more! We will be sharing photographs, throwbacks, and more throughout the month to celebrate our collections and our work. We also will have a new display up - come check it out!
