The Garmin Kansas City Marathon is on Saturday October 17, 2026. It includes the following events: Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, Virtual Marathon, Virtual Half Marathon, Virtual 10K, and Virtual 5K.

How do you know if a pursuit is worthless?

Proverbs says:

“Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense.” — Proverbs 12:11 ESV

Worthless: The pursuit has no value or use to you or anyone else.
Lacks sense: Cannot perceive the obvious.

Before you give something your time, energy, and attention, ask:

What does it produce?
Who does it serve?
Does it produce Christlike qualities in me?
Does it fulfill a purpose God has given me?
Can I do it as service to Christ?
Where does its value end?

Bread is temporary, but the farmer’s work has eternal ties. The bread comes from God’s provision, serves his family, develops the man, fulfills God’s purpose for work, and is ultimately done for an eternal Master.

“You are serving the Lord Christ.” — Colossians 3:24 ESV

We may justify the worthless as valuable to us. These questions help us perceive what should be obvious.

If you are asking God about which way to go, do not doubt that he will answer you, because if you do, you will not "hear" it.

Therefore in your prayer for wisdom in a matter, also ask to not doubt and "listen" for the answer in faith.

David said the quiet part out loud:

“They were too mighty for me.” — Psalm 18:17

As men, we often struggle to ask for help—let alone admit that something is simply too much for us.

We try to muscle through it, will ourselves through it, or think our way around it. But sometimes the first step toward receiving help is having the humility to admit, “I cannot overcome this on my own.”

And there is one enemy every man eventually faces that is too mighty for him: death.

We cannot outwork it, outthink it, or overcome it through enough good works. “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23), and “the last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1 Corinthians 15:26).

So we look to the One who has already defeated the enemy we cannot:

Jesus Christ, “who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” — 2 Timothy 1:10

Sometimes asking for help begins by simply admitting:

“This is too mighty for me.”

We are remarkably good at finding reasons why Jesus should finally cast us out.

I've sinned too much. I've failed too many times. I've wandered too far. Surely His patience with me has a limit.

But Jesus answers every excuse with the same promise:

“Whoever comes to me I will never cast out.” — John 6:37

John Bunyan captured this beautifully in his litany: objection after objection from the sinner, met again and again with Christ's answer:

“I will in no wise cast out.”
