This , Saints Upper School students, led by Director of Admissions Hamill Jones'00 and Assistant Director of Athletics Stephen Lewis, spent the morning walking the Richmond Slave Trail. Jones, a former history teacher, provided context for the activity and led the group in discussions along the way. The visit helped the group appreciate the meaning of Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, and learn more about their home city of Richmond, which played a significant role in the Atlantic slave trade.

We couldn't have picked a more gorgeous day to kick off the first week of Summer Saints! Boys and girls swam, played sports, and got creative with music and art. It's going to be a great summer on StC's campus!

Our Upper School, in coordination with , recently completed X-term, a yearlong enrichment experience that allows students to explore and exchange ideas outside the traditional classroom setting.

Students immersed themselves in the Spanish language in Salamanca, Spain, zip lined through the mountains of Virginia, examined the history of WWII in Normandy, canoed and camped along the James River, and much more.

So proud of our fourth graders! During the last weeks of school, the boys were visited by business-savvy Saints parents and challenged to create a business idea in small groups. The boys learned about research, marketing, sales and other concepts. The students then presented their ideas to visiting girls from St. Catherine's School. Great job, gentlemen!

It was great having alumnus Joseph Long '22 speak to our sixth grade boys last week! Long, now an aerospace engineer student at West Virginia University, brought meticulously modeled, working examples of his rockets, which he uses in his academic certifications. Long also managed to locate his old water rocket project, "PInk Beauty," which he made as a sixth grader in Mr. Dunn's class. "The best part about being back on campus was seeing how all my teachers immediately recognized me," said Long. "I got to talk with them a bit. It was also great to see all the sixth graders invested in their water rocket projects." Great having you back, Joseph!

The arts are thriving at StC! In recent weeks, we've been thrilled to see so many of our students, along with girls from St. Catherine's School, fill Ryan Recital Hall with a wonderful variety of music and songs. This included a performance by Viale D'Acero, the new joint Middle School choir group. Congratulations to these talented young musicians and the Saints community for their support!

Last week, our fifth grade boys visited Camp River's Bend for an overnight trip to hike, explore the river, play games, and bond in the Allegheny Mountains. As the boys look forward to Middle School next year, the Student Council Association offered words of gratitude. Remembering their time together in the Lower School, the boys also broke into small groups to reflect on their time together and the adventures that lie ahead.

We want to give a huge shout-out to StC's teachers and nurses, who pour their hearts into their work. They inspire our boys in the classroom, push them to new heights on the athletic fields, and care for them every day. We're so fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated team!

Many thanks to our Parents Association for celebrating our educators and providing fun treats all week!

We were thrilled to have Rave "Seven" Williams on campus this morning! Williams a dance instructor and hip hop enthusiast, took fifth grade boys through some foundational dance techniques. For weeks, the boys have been learning about the history and culture of hip hop in Lower School Music Teacher Mary Tryer's classes, and this was a great opportunity to introduce movement into the curriculum.

"Growing up, I was always taught that you can't truly appreciate where something is going until you know where it came from," said Williams. "When you start learning the history, you understand to learn why those movements are in place, you start to understand the pain and struggle," said Williams.

Bravo to our amazing Middle School readers! During the February Reading Challenge, MS boys read a total of over 27 million words and 392 books. The competition involved 77 students in 22 teams, and they accomplished it all in just one month.

Congratulations to the winning team, the Cross Crusaders, which won by a very close margin, and the second and third-place teams, the Tyler Torpedoes and the Daigneau Dazzlers. Go Saints!

We're so proud of this year's Capstone Scholars! Seniors Anderson Gates, Charlie Hudson, Oliver Smith, Grady White and Captain Worrell worked with Upper School faculty members to conduct long-term, high-quality research projects beyond the scope of their normal coursework.

The projects included a comparative analysis of Ghana's and Sierra Leone's development trajectories, the impact of resilience on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, computer science and video game design, leadership development in young men, and improving health care systems in a rural Idaho community. Great job, Saints!

"It's with great pride—and even greater shock—that at the age of 65, I stand before you as the oldest living Black graduate of St. Christopher's School," said Chuck Cummings, '76. "I won't offer much advice, but I will bear witness to how much St. Christopher's has changed for the better. Ultimately, this old-school Saint will offer up an appreciation for you, today's Saints."

It was great having Cummings on campus last week to talk to our Upper School in Memorial Chapel. The alumnus, who visited with other members of his graduating class, spoke in honor of StC's first Black graduate, Walter Lindsey '75. As a member of StC's Black Alumni Networking group, Cummings spoke candidly about the challenges he faced as a student in the '70s and reflected on the progress and positive changes he's witnessed in the years since. https://www.stchristophers.com/page/news-detail?pk=1585693
