Alumni had a blast at the Classes of 1977-1999 social last week! These spirited Spartans laughed, caught up, reminisced as they checked out some “vintage” school photos, and enjoyed refreshments. We love when our alumni come back to campus!

Steward’s annual Alumni Inspiration Day took place on January 19 and brought together graduating seniors and Spartan alumni. The school’s mission of preparing students for college and for life is exemplified on Alumni Inspiration Day when seniors attend workshops led by successful alumni and chat about college and career goals. Building and engaging the community (including our terrific alumni!) is a component of the school’s strategic plan, Compass 2028: Inspire the Future.

The faces of all 1,502 Steward alumni now reside in a hallway of the Upper School to smile upon the current students who will one day join them! Beginning with the school’s first three graduates in 1977, and going all the way through the class of 2023, there is now a composite for each class, recognizing the importance of those who have come before. The composites also include the school’s seal for each era, and graduating classes will be added each year once the students are officially alumni. We hope alumni will return to visit the wall and walk down memory lane for decades to come!

The newly created Lifer Terrace, which is located outside the Athletic Center, was dedicated after Convocation this year which was so fitting because Sandy Szilassy, the 2023 Alumni Achievement Award winner, was one of Steward’s first lifers. Brick pavers display the names of all 178 Steward lifers (alumni who attended Steward from junior kindergarten or kindergarten through Grade 12) and each year more bricks will be added to Lifer Terrace. The Class of 2024 includes 20 lifers and it’s the first to include students who started at Steward in junior kindergarten. Next time you are on campus, stop by and take a look!

The Alumni Achievement Award is a cherished Convocation tradition. The award recognizes outstanding members of the alumni community who live out the Steward mission through inspiration, engagement, and care of others. This year’s award was presented to Alexandra “Sandy” Szilassy ’86 for her commitment and dedication to leadership and excellence in women’s athletics, her entrepreneurship in founding TCOYO Hockey, and for continuing to represent Steward School values. Board of Trustees member Susan Cramer Twining ’84 introduced Ms. Szilassy during Convocation. Congratulations Sandy!

One of Steward’s first lifers (alumni who attended Steward from junior kindergarten or kindergarten through Grade 12), Ms. Szilassy has made significant contributions to the School. She led an indoor field hockey program and spearheaded field hockey camps for Janet Rice, retired athletic director, and Mrs. Twining, former field hockey coach. Dedicated to helping others, she teaches at and serves as chair of the Special Education Department at Salem High School in Virginia Beach, Va.
