From the Superintendent:
Dear Strong Family,
I'm reaching out with this special RPS Direct to share that RPS will be closed tomorrow as a result of today's inclement weather.
As I shared in an RPS Direct before Winter Break, the primary driver for this decision is whether our nutrition and transportation teams will be able to safely get to work and deliver food in the morning, as I do not want any children to have to attend online classes without breakfast.
Although the exact impact of this storm over the next 12 hours is unclear, it appears very likely that the roads will be icy early tomorrow when our nutrition and transportation teams need to report. I don't want them to have to navigate what are likely to be very dangerous roads on their way to work and during the meal distribution process.
Please note that we will still have our regularly scheduled School Board meeting tomorrow at 6 pm.
Thank you for your understanding and support. If you have any questions, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Best,
Jason

CelebrateRVA Donations to Celebrate Betsy Haas’s 14th Birthday
Each year, Spooky Saturday falls on or around the birthday of forever Munford Monarch Betsy Haas, and her family asks their Munford family to help celebrate her birthday by supporting CelebrateRVA and donating items they need.
This year, to continue the tradition and remember our friend Betsy, we will have a box at Spooky Saturday to collect non-perishable snacks and drinks for the children served by CelebrateRVA.
To make it even easier, you can select items from the Amazon Wishlist that will send the items directly to the Haas family so they can donate them in Betsy’s name. What a wonderful way to give back and remember a special Monarch! Please make a donation today: bit.ly/BeckyHaas14

Spooky Saturday Reimagined
Spooky Saturday is the Mary Munford PTA’s major fall event. It is one of our largest PTA fundraisers of the year and is loved by all ages in the Munford community and beyond. As Mr. Muzik likes to say, in addition to being a fundraiser, it’s a “friendraiser.” Traditionally featuring inflatables, games, great food and more, Spooky Saturday serves to welcome new families to Munford and is the event alumni love to return to. It is Munford at our best, doing what we love, spending time with family and friends.
As with most events in 2020, this year’s Spooky Saturday cannot look the same as it has in years past, but the Spooky Saturday committee was determined to replicate the fun and community of Spooky Saturday while encouraging everyone to maintain a safe social distance. The committee accepted the challenge and came up with a 2020 version of Spooky Saturday. This year, as many families have been hit with financial stress, we’ll be embracing the “friendraiser” aspect of the event.
Spooky Saturday activities:
The signature event will be a Spooky Saturday Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, October 24th. Groups of family and/or friends will use the LetsRoam app to follow clues and complete challenges in the neighborhoods surrounding Mary Munford. Groups must have at least one adult but can be as small or large as you’d like. Groups may also team up to complete challenges. The activity will start and end at the Munford pavilion. We ask that participants follow all traffic/pedestrian rules, wear masks if close to others, and keep a safe social distance as much as possible.
The scavenger hunt is “pay what you can” with a suggested donation of $10 per team/code, but a donation is not a requirement for participation in the hunt. All donations may be made via the Spooky Saturday Store on PTBoard by clicking the link below.
Teams can stop by the Munford pavilion any time after 9:00 am on Saturday, October 24th to get their code and begin the scavenger hunt. Each device needs a separate code, so if multiple team members would like to use their own device, they will each need their own code.
The hunt will take approximately 90 minutes and must be completed by 1:30 pm to be eligible for entry into the Spooky Saturday raffle.
Every person who completes the scavenger hunt will receive a goodie bag, and each team that completes it will receive 5 raffle tickets to be entered into a raffle for prizes.
Additional raffle tickets are available for purchase at $1/ticket, $10 for 12 tickets, and $20 for 25 tickets. The drawing will take place at 2:00 pm via Facebook.
In addition to the Scavenger Hunt, families can participate in three other Spooky Saturday activities from home during the week of October 24 to November 1st. At-home Spooky Saturday activities are:
Costume Contest - Students are encouraged to show off their best Halloween costume by posting on Instagram and tagging . Prizes will be given for the best costumes.
Jack-O-Lantern Decorating - Families can decorate paper pumpkins and display them in front windows. We encourage Munford families to walk around the neighborhood to take a look at the creative, funny, scary and festive jack-o-lanterns decorated by fellow Munford monarchs! Paper pumpkins will be available at the pavilion on Spooky Saturday.
DIY Cookie Decorating - Cookie kits will be available for purchase in advance and at the pavilion. The kits, provided by Mixing Bowl Bakery, are nut-free and include 8 Halloween-themed cookies, 3 sprinkle containers, and 3 icing bags for a fun and delicious family activity during the week leading up to Halloween. Cookie kits are $15 and are available for pre-order through the Spooky Saturday store by clicking the link below.
https://marymunford.ptboard.com/formvw?store=1854&form=7
And what would Spooky Saturday be without food? This year at the pavilion, we’ll have Iron Clad Coffee from 8:30-11:00 am and jiji frozen custard from 11:00 am-2:30 pm. Grab some coffee when you start the hunt and celebrate your scavenger hunt success with some frozen custard!

This Wednesday, October 7th is a Mary Munford Spirit Night at Mellow Mushroom in Carytown. This time, it’s an entire Spirit DAY! But no matter when or how you order, be sure your receipt gets placed in the fishbowl at the front desk in order for Munford to get credit for your order.
So skip planning dinner on Wednesday night and let Mellow Mushroom handle it. Or if dinner is already planned, why not try lunch? In addition to pizza, Mellow Mushroom has great salads, hoagies, and burgers, If your budget allows, we hope you’ll consider supporting Munford with this spirit event!
