It should come at no surprise that a woman invented the modern dishwasher. What is surprising is the story of the inventor herself, a story that VCU’s Dean of Libraries and University Librarian Irene Herold knows well. The inventor and businesswoman was the subject of Dr. Herold’s master’s degree thesis in history at Western Illinois University. Josephine Garis Cochran had no formal mechanical engineering education, but she designed, built, marketed and sold her dishwashing machine in the 1880s. Her public story--told largely through newspapers--was filled with myths and mistakes about her family, her social class and even the inspiration for her invention. Herold helps set the record straight in a History Channel article posted this week. Beyond the misrepresentations and myths, “She was a remarkable woman with her real story,” Herold told reporter Becky Little. “She was not just the inventor, but she was also the manufacturer, the salesperson, she oversaw installations and she continuously improved her invention through multiple patents.”

VCU Libraries' annual Constitution Day event focuses on the 26th amendment. Historian Carolyn Eastman, Ph.D., and political scientist John Aughenbaugh, Ph.D., explore and explain how the 26th Amendment was born from student activism and protests in the Vietnam War era and beyond. The 26th made the voting age 18. The event, free and open to all, will be in the Lecture Hall, today, Sep. 19, at 2 p.m. at Branch Cabell Library, 901 Park Ave. Come and learn about your right to vote. https://www.library.vcu.edu/about/events/2024-2025/constitution-day-.html.
