Richmond Academy of Medicine

Maintaining a dynamic & innovative physician community for the benefit of the Greater Richmond area.

The Academy is the largest and oldest independent physician's association in Virginia. We provide a variety of educational, social, and legislative meetings and other opportunities throughought the year. We also administer Access Now, a specialty medical care service for the "working poor;" the Centralized Credentials Verification Service; and the Member Services Corporation, providing specialty society management for a number of state medical societies.

RAM hosted a Legislative Reception at Virginia Physicians for Women on Wednesday evening, December 6th, where members were able to discuss scope of practice, prior authorization reform, and COPN, among other issues, with legislators. We'd like to thank Senator Ghazala Hashmi, Senators-elect Glen Sturtevant and Schuyler VanValkenburg, Delegate Betsy Carr, and Delegate-elect Mark Earley for joining us.

Thanks to the nearly 50 RAM members for coming out to visit with their legislators and a special thanks to Virginia Physicians for Women for allowing the Academy to host this event at their Koger Center Office.

A light (and bright!) tone was set this past Sunday, when hundreds of RAM members and their guests got in the holiday spirit at RAM's Family Night at Dominion Energy's GardenFest of Lights at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. The weather was beautiful (perhaps a tad too warm for December but we shouldn't complain) and the refreshments were delicious! Thanks to all who participated!

Nearly twenty Richmond-area physicians attended RAM's Malpractice Lawsuit 101 educational presentation this past Thursday, Nov. 30th to find out! Thank you to all who attended!

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Warren Woodson Koontz Jr., M.D., urologist and professor emeritus in the VCU Department of Surgery. He joined the medical school’s faculty in 1970 as professor and urology chair, a position he held until 1993. He served as associate dean for clinical affairs from 1982-88 and was appointed professor emeritus in 2001.

He and his wife established the Warren W. Koontz Jr. Endowed Research Professorship to help support and further the mission of research within urology. We will remember him with respect and affection.

Is your child too sick for school? | Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU It’s just a few weeks into the new school year and your child isn’t feeling well. It seems to happen every year, inevitably when you have a big meeting at work, doctor’s appointment or other plans that are difficult to miss. They can still go to school, right?
