December 1 is World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is observed to remind the world of the still-ongoing effort against HIV/AIDS related stigma, to honor those lost to this disease, and to raise awareness of the continuing work to one day end HIV as a threat to public health.

The first World AIDS Day was observed in 1988, making this year the 35th annual World AIDS Day. World AIDS Day is still as necessary as ever; there is more work to be done. UNAIDS, the organization within the United Nations working to end HIV/AIDS as a public health threat, puts it this way:

World AIDS Day remains as relevant today as it’s always been, reminding people and governments that HIV has not gone away. There is still a critical need for increased funding for the AIDS response, to increase awareness of the impact of HIV on people’s lives, to end stigma and discrimination and to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV.
