The new issue of PROGRESS, Virginia's adult education and literacy news journal is now available!

Those of us who have the privilege to work with newcomers to our country know the JOY that comes from helping individuals learn about the United States and how to integrate into society. We are truly enriched as we engage with cultures from around the world and very often learn just as much, if not more, from the learners we teach. In this issue of PROGRESS, we hear from educators who focus on civics instruction. Effective civic education can empower learners to make a difference in their governments and in their communities—and meaningful civic participation can go a long way toward making our learners and the communities where they live more connected to essential resources and opportunities. Fortunately for adult learners in Virginia, we have strong programs around the state that are doing great things to engage learners in civic participation. Dig into this issue to learn more about what these programs are doing.

What do you think the theme of our next PROGRESS issue should be? What are we doing collectively as a state to move adult education forward? What do you want to learn more about? What do you want to know from your colleagues across Virginia and beyond? Please comment and let us know your article idea(s)!

The new issue of PROGRESS, Virginia's adult education and literacy news journal is now available.

In this issue, we take a look at mathematics and numeracy from multiple perspectives. While many claim that math is the most challenging subject to teach and learn, educators in the articles provided share how they have approached the teaching of math concepts in their adult learning programs—and most importantly—how they have worked to make math approachable. From research-based and standards-aligned tools and methods to steps, strategies, and resources that are interactive and supportive for GED® math test preparation; authors representing program management, ESL, Corrections, Reading, and more demonstrate that you do not need to be a math expert to help adults not just survive math, but learn to love it!
