Sgt. Casey Schmidt has dedicated his career not only to serving and protecting the Fort Bend County community, but also to training and mentoring the next generation of law enforcement officers as a dedicated instructor at the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy.

His commitment to his students, fellow officers, and the law enforcement profession has made a lasting impact on countless cadets and officers who have had the opportunity to learn from him.

Now, as Sgt. Schmidt continues his fight against Stage 4 lung cancer, members of the community are coming together to support him and his family.

Training today. Prepared for tomorrow.

The Gus George Law Enforcement Academy recently welcomed members of the Angleton ISD Police Department for a full day of specialized training ahead of the new school year.

Officers completed a four-hour Basic Shield Operator Course, followed by a four-hour Manual Breaching Course, strengthening skills that can be critical when responding to emergency situations.

As students and staff return to the classroom, preparedness remains a priority. GGLEA is proud to provide law enforcement agencies with hands-on training designed to strengthen their skills, enhance their response capabilities, and help them make a difference when it matters most.

The Gus George Law Enforcement Academy was proud to host the ALERRT ERASE Train the Trainer course this week, welcoming 22 law enforcement officers from across Texas, as well as agencies from Washington and Florida.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office has a strategic partnership with the ALERRT organization. This partnership established the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy as an authorized training provider to offer Active attack training to Law Enforcement Officers in Region 2, South East Texas.

This specialized training equips officers with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively respond to active shooter and other critical incidents, ensuring they are prepared when lives are on the line.

At the Gus George Law Enforcement Academy, we believe that continuous training, collaboration, and preparedness are essential to building stronger law enforcement professionals and safer communities.

The Gus George Law Enforcement Academy (GGLEA) is currently accepting candidates and conducting entrance testing for our upcoming Basic Peace Officer Licensing Course (Class #51).
This six-month academy program is designed to prepare future law enforcement professionals to become licensed Texas Peace Officers while earning a competitive salary throughout training.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

✔️ Paid Cadet Position – $27.54 per hour
✔️ Earn 24 College Credit Hours upon successful Academy completion
✔️ Train at the new Fort Bend Regional Training Center
✔️ Learn from experienced law enforcement professionals
✔️ Prepare for the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Licensing Examination
✔️ Develop leadership, discipline, communication, and decision-making skills
✔️ Gain hands-on experience through practical and scenario-based training

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
✔️ Must be 21 years of age
✔️ Must be a United States Citizen
✔️ Must possess a Valid Texas Driver's License
✔️ Must meet all applicable TCOLE licensing requirements
✔️ Must successfully complete the Academy entrance testing process

ACADEMY ENTRANCE TESTING PROCESS:
Candidates must successfully complete the following entrance examinations:
Phase I – Physical Fitness Test
🏃 1.5-Mile Run
Must be completed in under 16 minutes
Phase II – Nelson-Denny Reading Test
📚 The Nelson-Denny Test evaluates:
Vocabulary
Reading Comprehension
Reading Effectiveness
Candidates who successfully complete both testing phases will advance to the Academy application process.

PHYSICAL EVALUATION REQUIREMENT:
A completed Physical Evaluation is required before testing.
Prior to scheduling and attending entrance testing, applicants must:
Download the Physical Evaluation Form from the testing registration website.
Have the form completed and signed by a licensed physician.
Bring the completed form to their scheduled testing date.
Applicants will not be permitted to test without a completed and physician-signed Physical Evaluation Form.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER TESTING?
Candidates who successfully complete the testing process may advance to:
✔️ Formal Academy Application
✔️ Background Investigation
✔️ Oral Interview Process
✔️ Additional Selection Requirements
Qualified candidates will be considered for enrollment in Class #51, beginning August 24, 2026.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
Upon successful graduation from the Academy and passing the TCOLE Licensing Examination, graduates become eligible for licensure as a Texas Peace Officer and will become a Deputy with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.
