Discover the secrets behind young readers' path to literacy through engaging discussions led by experienced, credentialed teachers. Dive deep into essential topics such as readiness for learning, enhancing expressive language, practical activities for home and school, and the fascinating world of phonetics. Uncover the art of writing through exploring manual dexterity, composition skills, and fun educational activities. Navigate the reading realm, from fostering a love for books at home to understanding the comprehensive scope of language lessons and overcoming barriers to reading. This is a not-to-miss event for parents eager to support their child’s linguistic journey from infancy to adulthood.
Enjoy light refreshments as we share valuable insights and strategies. Please note, this adults-only event starts promptly at 7 pm (school doors will open at 6:45pm), and no childcare will be available.

Remembering Ben...
Remembering Ben... by Sarah McDowell, Head of School Recently the news of the death of a former student of ours here at Midlothian Montessori has rocked my world. Ben Gateley passed at 22 years of age, after losing the battle with depression. I met Ben’s dad Eugene Gateley in my college days as a fellow chess buddy,...
We have been struck this week with the sad news of the passing of a former student. As we have reached out to share the news with our alumni students and parents directly over the past few days, we want to let you know we are in the planning stages of making a tribute for Ben and a possible Alumni Reunion in his honor. Please feel free to share memories of Ben, and your time with him and his mom, the lovely Ms. Tina, and his dad, Chess Coach Eugene. Thoughts and prayers go to his parents, Josh and Bella (his siblings), his beloved Aunt Delana, and the rest of the friends and family who are missing him so much already.

As the crisp air of fall approaches, even our eight-legged residents are getting into the spirit of the season!! 🕸️ This intricate spiderweb, nestled among the tree in front of our school, is a reminder of the beauty and wonder that surrounds us every day. Here's to embracing the magic of autumn and the lessons nature has to offer! 🍁✨
Launching Literature camp! What fun to delve into the lessons and morals behind many of Aesop’s fables this week. The children showed savvy skills when it came to extricating the moral of the story. In the end, we ended up collaboratively writing and illustrating two of our own Aesopian fables - The Starling and the Sugar-Glider and The Squirrel and the Mouse. The children were so full of wisdom and ideas in how to convey the morals we chose through their choices of animals and how they personified them. Everyone went home with their own copy of our self-published book!
We just wrapped up one of our favorite summer offerings-- Chess and Games camp. Even the youngest campers got familiar with the pieces and terminology. Our more advanced players worked on: tactics, such as openings, end game, castling, development: guarding center, fianchetto bishop: double attacks, forks, pins, attack the defender, and discovered checks.
Chess and Games camp also reinforces all the benefits of playing games-- developing logic, reasoning, memory, problem-solving, planning and foresight, and connecting with others in a positive social situation.
Chess in particular has been a subject of study and research repeatedly shows chess has great benefits for children. One study had children spend 60 hours on a chosen activity or creative writing. The chess players scored above all the others by a huge margin in critical thinking AND creative thinking! How cool is that?

Nature camp was a huge success! Here are some snippets of our week, from our eyes-only nature scavenger hunt to our mindful nature gathering collages!
Special thanks to our own recent environmental studies/earth science graduate of a teacher, Miss Madelaine, for sharing a wealth of knowledge and insight to our campers this week. They have all shown signs of becoming wonderful stewards of nature!

For our second week of summer camp, we put a stamp on our passports as we ventured off to... Mexico! Campers delighted in making their own mini passports and Mexican flags, and even decorated their own sombreros. Many of our art projects centered around this vibrant, colorful country and the Spanish Language as well. We sang songs, learned various new vocabulary words, and read many books. We learned about significant holidays celebrated there, like Independence Day and Dia de Los Mu***os, and talked about many different foods and traditions that take place in Mexico. As we say, ADIOS AMIGOS to our second week of camp, we thank all who have come out and supported us, and look forward to our third week of camp, July 10th - July 13th, Nature Camp!!!!
Wrapping up our first week of summer- Peace Camp was a blast! During this session, our campers engaged in activities centered around mindfulness, kindness, and manners. We did yoga, worked with Zen gardens, and made silence together. Outdoor activities were a hit, including parachutes, dino washing, and many art projects. We made many friends and played hard. Looking forward to seeing new smiling faces in our second session as we place a stamp on our Passport to Mexico 🥳🤩

Montessori students are often noted for their grasp of language - from writing to reading, they've been given a strong and intentionally laid foundation.
Join us on May 13 for this exploration into the magic behind the brilliance of the Montessori language materials. Get your hands on these brilliantly designed materials, and learn about the sequence we follow.
Seasoned Montessori educators Sarah McDowell (certified in primary and lower/upper elementary) and Susan Saunders (certified primary teacher) have developed this hands-on workshop to inspire, inform and engage parents, caretakers and educators from all schools. Having been there to watch many a child joyfully burst into reading and writing, they will share the many steps they have watched children take as they travel the windy but rewarding road to literacy!
Please see the flyer below for details. Email us at [email protected] with any questions - and please share far and wide with anyone who would benefit.
