Don't forget that tomorrow night is Transition Night. Come learn about how to avoid the summer slide, and hear from teachers about how to prepare your child for the upcoming school year. You will have the chance to visit classrooms and ask questions. You can even visit The Big Blue Bus! Dinner will be served and you can make your own ice cream sundae. See you tomorrow night at 5:30 in the Johnson cafeteria!

SUNDAY IS THE DEADLINE TO APPLY TO BE PART OF HENRICO COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS' NEW EQUITY AND DIVERSITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Applications are being accepted for Henrico County Public Schools’ new Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee. Formation of the 26-person committee is the school division’s next step in its efforts to increase equity and diversity. The deadline to apply is May 13.

To apply go to http://vovici.com/wsb.dll/s/b581g5a814 or go to henricoschools.us and look under “Hot Topics.”

The group will include one teacher, one student, one parent and one school leader from each of Henrico’s five magisterial districts. Five seats are reserved for interested citizens, preferably one from each magisterial district. The committee will be chaired by the director of equity and diversity and supported by a liaison from the Henrico School Board.

The committee will meet approximately nine times, generally the first Tuesday evening of each month, between June and March. Members will also be part of one or more subcommittees devoted to focused topics. The smaller groups will meet as necessary.

Applicants are requested to provide demographic information, respond to several questions, and provide one personal recommendation in the event that they become a finalist. The demographic information will be used to ensure diverse representation. Personal recommendations will only be requested during the final selection process.

Questions about the process can be directed to Monica Manns, the school division’s director of equity and diversity, at [email protected].

One source that will inform the new committee’s agenda will be information gleaned from a series of community listening sessions. The sessions are being held in each magisterial district by the school division’s Office of Equity and Diversity. Feedback received at the forums will be shared with the advisory committee, as well as School Board members and Henrico Schools administrators. The final listening session will be today (May 1) from 4-5 p.m. at the Twin Hickory Area Library at 5001 Twin Hickory Road in Glen Allen. In addition, a survey will be forthcoming. The data from the sessions and survey will help guide the division’s next steps.

“If we identify themes emerging, those will be possible areas of focus for the Equity and Diversity Advisory Committee,” Manns said.
