Federal judge rules that admissions changes at nation’s top public school discriminate against Asian-American students | Pacific Legal Foundation 02/26/2022

WE WON! Coalition for TJ is thrilled that Judge Claude Hilton has ruled in the favor of our parents, students, families and communities! In a scathing decision, Judge Hilton ruled that Fairfax County Public Schools discriminated against Asian-American students in its new admission process to Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. In his ruling, Judge Hilton stated, "The Board's main problem is its focus on the goal to have TJ reflect the demographics of the surrounding area, described primarily in racial terms. Far from a compelling interest, racial balancing for its own sake is 'patently unconstitutional'...The Board cannot transform racial balancing into a compelling interest 'simply by relabeling it racial diversity.'"

This ruling is a victory for Coalition for TJ and for parents everywhere who are questioning the unlawful acts of runaway school boards. Fairfax County Public School officials colluded to discriminate against students. Judge Hilton has ruled this discrimination is unconstitutional. Coalition for TJ looks forward to a return to merit-based admission at America's #1 high school, a Governor's School.

In 1992, Fairfax County, VA, mother Suparna Dutta arrived in the US from India. Today, she is an American hero.

This is how it happened. In June 2020, she spoke to the Fairfax County Public Schools board for the first time ever to advocate for honoring merit in education at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. The school board’s 12 members ignored her. The school principal ignored her. In August 2020, she cofounded Coalition for TJ to advocate for the American Dream.

In 2021, Suparna led the Educators for Youngkin Coalition, mobilizing parents for Glenn Youngkin for governor of Virginia. Today, Jan. 15, 2022, Gov. Youngkin picked Suparna to deliver the one reading at his inaugural address. The honor was well-deserved for our courageous mother.

Wearing an elegant sari at the inauguration, she said, “Too often, we feel: I can’t. Or: others will. For so many, engaging in our democracy feels like the road not taken. Have courage and faith to get involved, to be engaged in OUR Virginia. We will all be better for it.”

She then beautifully delivered a Robert Frost poem, “The road not taken.”

She ended: “God bless the United States of America!”

Wait for her air fist pumps! 👏🏽

Coalition for TJ v. Fairfax County School Board | Pacific Legal Foundation 12/21/2021

We are so grateful to our friends at Pacific Legal Foundation. In the fall of 2020, long before many spoke the words “critical race theory,” our friends at Pacific Legal Foundation understood that ideologues and activists had their eyes set on America’s No. 1 high school in their racist war on merit. Our Asian, immigrant families were smeared as “white adjacent” and “resource hoarders” but we knew one thing: we unapologetically believe in the American Dream. And this nation is so fortunate that Pacific Legal Foundation exists — as protectors of the American Dream. Here is to victory in the courts in January 2022!

"Let them die!" said Fairfax County NAACP 1st Vice President Michelle Leete at a July 15, 2021, protest, about not only parents opposed to critical race theory but also "anti-admissions policy changes." Fairfax County Democratic Committee Chair Bryan Graham applauded as did other leaders, inlcuding teachers' union officials, members of TJAAG and a former TJ PTSA president. We reject all violence and call for all leaders to condemn this dehumanization of others and call to violence. Watch the entire event here.
