Looking for some summer fun? Get creative with our neighbors over at at Westover HIlls UMC!! (This class is offered independently of PHSSA, but sure to be a good time!)

Class Description
Get creative with clay! Students will make pinch pots and turn them into bowls or mugs. They can play around with designs and turn their forms into animals and add handles, for example. Students will be able to paint their pots with underglazes to make them colorful. All work will be fired and glazed and returned in approximately 2-3 weeks after class.

Instructor Bio
Joanna Gragnani is from Richmond, VA and discovered clay her freshman year of high school and became immediately hooked. Throughout college at the University of Virginia she studied art history, but came back to clay when she moved to Seattle, WA and began taking classes again. After returning to Richmond, Joanna rediscovered the Visual Arts Center and started taking clay classes there, as well as interning in the clay studio. This led to becoming a member of the Old Tavern Kiln Collective and building a wood kiln in New Kent, VA. She loves the community aspect of ceramics and finds inspiration in fellow clay artists and her students. Joanna currently works out of her space at Blue Dot Studios, and she focuses on hand-building and creates organic forms that emphasize the process. She teaches hand-building at the Visual Arts Center and Hand/Thrown Studio, and she also leads mobile clay classes around Richmond in customers' homes and businesses.

It has been a busy year so far for our Mighty Oaks. Thanks to our community supporters, incredible teachers and staff, and our tireless school leadership, we have been able to build upon our foundation and accomplish the following:

Exploration of the Environment
🌱Our Garden Committee hosted A Taste of the Garden so students could taste food prepared from their gardens
🦋2nd Graders returned to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
🛶4th & 5th Graders learned to kayak in Reedy Creek
⛺️4th & 5th Graders camped overnight in Pocahontas State Park

Expansion of the Arts
🎼Arts Ignite provided a Rising Stars Arts Camp during fall intercession
🩰Students celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a visit from the Latin Ballet of Virginia
🎭4th Grade students are integrating social studies and arts by putting on a play

We would like to continue this growth, both of programs and into the top floor of the building. Please consider making a gift to PHSSA this year. With your support we will continue to deliver a unique educational experience to our students that focuses on environmental education and arts.

A wonderfully productive Garden Work Day today! We cleared the beds and planted cover crops and vegetables. We also saved seeds and harvested some marigolds for crafts. 🌼

Second, third, and fourth graders will be invited by Mrs. Marundé to plant some garlic when we return from fall break. 🧄

Looking to help during the fall/winter months? Consider donating bags of raised bed mix for the herb spiral, or perhaps you have a few minutes and can turn the compost piles in the Victory Garden? You can also always add seeds to the Free Seed Library located at the playground side entrance to the Victory Garden. 🌱

We were delighted to have a successful launch of our kayaking program on Friday. Fourth graders hiked from the school to Reedy Creek and then explored Reedy Creek in kayaks. The trip even included an introduction to paw-paws and the animals that eat them. We're excited for more classes to have this experience!

We are deeply appreciative of Ms. Michael who made this happen, and our friends at Riverside Outfitters.
