Motorists STOP for Pedestrians Law Effective on July 1. HB1705 has been adopted by the Virginia House and Senate and signed by the Governor. It is effective on July 1, 2020. This requires drivers to stop when yielding the right of way. An excerpt follows:
Clarifies the duties of vehicle drivers to stop when yielding to pedestrians at (i) clearly marked crosswalks, whether at midblock or at the end of any block; (ii) any regular pedestrian crossing included in the prolongation of the lateral boundary lines of the adjacent sidewalk at the end of a block; or (iii) any intersection when the driver is approaching on a highway where the maximum speed limit is not more than 35 miles per
